Is there one?
We've got some Euros over here changed up to take with us, but i've got some more english money going in to my account whilst we are away, and was hoping that i could draw it out there from an ATM machine and change it up somewhere in playa blanca?
thanks,
Kerry
Wouldn't the ATM pay in Euros?
I have no idea lol
ATM's in Lanzarote pays in €
sorry - had a blonde moment lol
So would it use a conversion charge to change my account to euros when i draw it out?
I have to admit, I find it much easier travelling abroad not having to worry about changing my money since we all went euro...
Confused as to which type of travellers Cheques to take with me.
We usually take AMex Euro as the hotel reception always changes these for handyness. I have contacted our hotel and they charge 1% to change AMex Euro cheques (50c for 50€) and 2-3% for £Stg cheques, this works out roughly the same with my calculations (they could be wrong!!).
We did think about taking our debit card but known our luck we will loose it, believe me what can happen will happen to us!! So we are not taking the card, just some cash and cheques.
Any opinions or advice???
Thanks
Jaime C
we just take euros,we know you shouldnt but we get better rate in england.but we do keep our money safe at all times.never had any problems but you do hear of people having it pinched,it is a risk we take good or bad.
Thanks for that, I think we will just take a mix of cash & cheques (Amex euro, means we don't have to take passport out of hotel), we always hire the safe and we keep copies of the travellers cheques separately with us and with someone back at home, so if the worst happens we can get replacements easier that getting a new bank card!!
We were in Prague in June and we just took cash and it was fine, you just need to be careful with it and not have it all with you.
Thanks

i would take euro travellers cheques i used to work in a travel agency and if you go to thomas cook they will recomend sterling ones but that is only becasuse they make more commision.
you get more back when you use euro ones
Sterling travellers cheques are what you need...you WILL be charged commission on Euro cheques as we found out from experience!
We have decided on Amex Euro cheques, they come in €50 cheques and the £stg cheques come in £100, we would not like to change that much in one day as I would spend it all - im a shopaholic , so the least money I have a day the better!!!
No really... we have always taken the Amex Euro cheques and got them from the Post Office where they don't charge commission, although their rate can be slightly lower than the travel agents, but they charge commission for buying them, so I usually shop about on the day of purchase. We have always been charged 1% for changing these at our hotels, which is ok for me. I would not like to have to take my passport out of the hotel too many times to change the £stg ones as most times we have been away they don't change them, just the Amex Euro cheques.
I think everyone is going to have their opinion on which is best, but whatever you are comfortable with then go with that!! ... Amex Euro Cheques, Visa £Stg Cheques, Visa Delta Debit Card, Cirrus Card, Mastercard, Visa, AMex Card - Oh My its all so confusing!!! I think we will forget what good old hard cash looks like in a few years time!!! ...Now if only I could find some of that..mmmmmm..
Thanks

is it sterling travellers cheques or euro? (is it true you don't get charged commission on sterling cheques?)
what about cash / ATM's - I've heard you get charged the standard commission rates if using atm's.
I would welcome your suggestions please...and has any one got some good recommendations for nice restaurants in Playa Blanca? Thanks

I ususlly take about 100 Euros and my cash card. There are plenty of ATMs and the exchange rate is good, no commision but some British banks charge you. For instance the Halifax chanrge £1.50 a time. I now only use my Nationwide card because they don't charge at all.
Thanks robertk - I've just looked on the Nationwide web site and they say they charge 1.50% commission (minimum of £1.50) or am I misunderstanding this?
Sorry - I meant £1.50 withdrawal fee and I'm assuming you mean the Nationwide credit card?
The nationwide internet banking is what we use. You use your hole in the wall card the same as in this country. We always get an excellent rate of exchange and no charges. Take some euros for your taxi or first night if you are not sure of the location of cash machines. There is a cash machine we used in the Netto supermarket in PB.
Just got back today from the Lanzarote princess in Playa Blanca and all that I took was cash. The hotel rooms had a safe in them and that is were i kept it at all times. I changed my money in England at 0%, so all in all it cost me nothing. I got talking to a few people who took travellers cheques and they were getting charged for the change over and at a bad rate of exchange. So my advice would be to just take euros.
When we went to Costa Teguise in May we took 300 euros and debit/credit cards. We needed thenm aswell spent a lot more than we wanted to. Mainly on food and drink. Not the cheapest place.
Sorry if this is too late, I left for Lanzarote just after your last message and came home last night.
To clarify for other people. I used my Nationwide Debit Card in restaurants and ATMs. there was no charge and I got a very reasonable exchange rate (1.47). I did use my Nationwide Credit Card twice and was also not charged but you will get a charge if you use a Credit Card in an ATM, like you do here if you take cash with a Credit Card.
Robert
