Thanks Bluepeterno1. They have chosen this charity because the other cyclists father has the disease. However this ride is no hardship to them, they are having a ball and seeing many countries for the first time. It will provide memories to last a life time. They are both 21 year old uni students and both very fit.

What a great story and well done to the boys. 3000 miles !!! make sure they get soft seats during the party ... Seriously, marvelous achievement and certainly an epic journey. Perhaps someone may be able to grab some photo's and post them on here. I'm certain there would be a great interest in this.

I will be there and will sure be looking out for them, I take it they will be cycling down the main road towards icmeller. Dont suppose you have an idea weather it will be morning or afternoon. But if I do see them I will take a photo for sure for everyone else to see.
A big thank to them for raising the money for a very well worth cause, well done!!

Thanks all. Not sure perrydog. Yes they will cycle from Marmaris to Datca along the main mountain road. They won't be going through Icmeler. Compared to all the other days this is a short ride and the mountains nothing really compared to the Alps. They have to arrive in Datca at 6.30 for an official welcome from the mayor I think. Then there will be a bit of a do by the harbour. I would think they will set off during the morning having plenty of time for stop offs at various beauty spots and will be accompanied on this stretch by some members of the Mugla cycling club. Dr Bulent Savran is the leader of this group and has been so kind in arranging things for them in Turkey. If I can work out how to do it I will post a few pics when I get back. I'm heading out to Datca on Sunday to prepare things and blow up all the balloons lol.

I'll try to find out where they will be starting from and what time as I'm sure they'd love a few friendly cheers. They will be starting from a camp site but not sure where they are in Marmaris. I think they will stand out from the crowd on Surly long Haul trucker bikes and all the lycra probably with Oxford University Cycling club written on them.

Does the Dacta road not start at the big roundabout way up from Tansas going away from the sea.

Yes I think so. We rarely go into Marmaris on our way there. The road just kind of goes along the back of Marmaris and then climbs up into the hills beyond.
I heard from the cyclists last night and they are now in Nafpaktos in Greece, not far from Patra.
If you would like to know more and maybe sponsor them this is the web site.

Sorry for the back to back posts but does anyone have details of camp sites in Marmaris? Web sites and or adresses would be useful please. Cyclists may have a couple of nights there.

Sorry for another back to back post but I wanted to say 'Thank you very much' to the kind lady who saw this thread and made a donation on their web site.

I notice people are still browsing this thread so I will just finish off the story by saying the lads made it to Datca last Saturday. They were half an hour late but that's not bad after 4012 km! 9 Turkish cyclists from a Mugla group accompanied them from Marmaris, The youngest being 10 and the oldest in his seventies. TRT television and several newspapers were there for the welcome and their story was televised and printed in Cumhuriyet and other papers on Monday. Turkish people and the Datca residents in particular have really entered into this with great enthusiasm and there is no chance of me keeping a low profile now with people rushing up to us and shaking our hands everywhere!! The party was wonderful with people coming from many countries and parts of Turkey. The lads think they have raised over £1000 and with the talks they plan to give and an auction of some beautiful Turkish things it may well be much more. Their chosen charity 'Prostate Cancer Charity' will be pleased with the money but more than that they like the awareness events like this promote. I have a photograph of a Turkish doctor (one of the cyclists) wearing one of their T shirts so I expect they will love that. Anyway back to the real world on Saturday for us.

Congratulations and well done to everyone involved, what a brilliant achievement and of course, well done for the fund raising, hopefully the auction will raise a lot more.
