We are considering flying into Alicante and out of Barcelona next May.
Can anyone recommend a car hire company that will do one way rentals without imposing a hefty charge. Quite a few companies do not yet have prices out for next summer.

Have you tried Holiday Autos? They're usually quite reasonable about this.
