We ALWAYS bring back cash from our holidays ... I always allow for more on food and drink per day than we actually spend and we rarely shop when away ,other than for a few cheap pressies for our kids.
We don't do many trips either - maybe a catamaran trip if in the Caribbean .
We are having a week's self catering holiday in Corfu in September -I've budgetted for 700 Euros cash - I'll probably bring at least 100 Euros back with me :rofl

Only Blew the Budget Once.

That was the year that Janet splashed out on a can of WD40. :(

She said that I was so tight that I squeeked! :tup

I read an interesting article recently which said that 7 out of 10 holidaymakers will spend more than they budgeted for this summer. The worst culprit is drink- the more you drink, the more you are likely to overspend. I also think its just holiday mode- you don't want to worry about money. My OH always announces that he is not on holiday to budget, but we don't overspend as we actually don't go daft anyway and neither of us particularly like shopping :D

We're pretty much like you Fiona , I do estimate what we will spend on poolside drinks , snacks and evening drinks , but if I want something I won't get my calculator and budget sheets out to check if it ok !! I like to have a bottle of wine in the evening if we're having a special meal , and sometimes a spa treatment if we feel like one .
We will take X amount of cash and put anything else we sign to the room on a card .
We have very few meals together at home because of differing working hours and days off so when we're away it's nice to be able to relax and enjoy some food and drink in a more leisurely way , rather than it being functional .

We don't budget either. We'll take X amount of €'s then just withdraw cash abroad. We don't buy a lot on holiday mind you, mainly food and drinks (but they are never that cheap)

never overspend the budget, simply becuase I don't budget at all.
I buy/spend as we need or decide.

I'm pretty much the same. Don't have a budget, before the holiday if it's not euroland I'll change a small amount of cash into the currency of the country I'm visiting and then withdraw cash as needed.

We have a sort of vague budget. We know what would be our ideal limit for spends, but will always have a bit of back up in the bank. I wonder if anyone else does the same as us. If we go for 2 weeks, we split our money into two bags, which makes it easier to see what we're spending. If one bag's empty before the end of the 1st week, then we know we're over our "ideal spend" :think

I don't have a budget - I just take 'sir' and he tells me when I have spent too much!!

When we go to Cuba we're based in All Inclusive so we need very little spending money, we spend our money on dining off resort which is really cheap anyway and a taxi ride to our friend's house (which is 2 hours away so about £100) we bring £300 each so total of £600 we always bring money back

When we go to Cyprus I usually budget myself to 50 a day (for me and my youngest) now that my eldest is 18 and working she will take her own and budget herself to approximately the same. When she goes to America her dad provides for her while she is visiting but always like to keep some money to do a spot of shopping at the airport! :) I don't often buy anything other than food at the airport going but coming back I spend my last few euros on the plane or at the airport so yes! pretty much always on budget!

Nothing to do with budget, but seeing as aiport spends coming home is mentioned.......
A friend went to Turkey earlier this year flying from Humberside.
On his return he bought a bottle of good scotch in the duty free Turkey,as a present for me looking after his dog
Because the flight was undersubscribed it was combined with a flight to Leeds Bradford.
At LBA all passengers were made to disembark and then the Humberside passengers went through security and re boarded......... the bottle of scotch was confiscated under the liquids on flights rules.

A bottle of Scotch ? :cry ....bet that didn't go in the waste bin!!! One happy Yorkshire chappy !!

EDIT -Thinking about it..wouldn't EVERYBODY who had duty free get pulled -I'm amazed that it didn't trigger an outcry and a few inches in the National press!

As far as I know, all those who had purchased liquids above the limit for security had it confiscated and it did cause an outcry, but not as far as the media.
My neighbour did take it up with the authorities but was told that it was in order.
What bugs me is why they had to disembark anyway.
No refuelling etc that I am aware of.
Jobsworth perhaps?

Surprised that they didn't stay airside - when we had to change planes in Lisbon on the way from Heathrow to Madeira, because the original plane had a fault,we were escorted back thru into Departure lounge and didn't have to have our hand luggage rechecked.

I too would have thought that at worst they would be taken into a transit approved area.

It depends on how well the trip works out - with more all inclusive trips, I never go over budget. But with other trips I've gone over budget with transportation costs, food and drink, gifts...
but I'm usually more in the mood to splurge when that happens too. ;)

Ctrl + Alt + 4 = €

When I was away in Italy I took €1000, now I made a diary of what I spent my Euros on, and I think this will help me with next year currency, how much do I need, so I now know the minimum I need, so on a average day, I was spending €20, and on the odd day €35, so over the 2 weeks I spent around €350
