I only ever use public transport on holiday if visiting a city. Other than that, I don't use it. I always hire a car for the duration of every foreign holiday we've been on in the last 10 years so I haven't needed to use any public transport. Mind you, thinking about it, I can't remember the last time I used public transport in this country either. :think

hi alll....Im wary of using the trains because if I get into bother and I cant speak the language I could have problems....and there can be quite big distances between stops...so could get out of my comfort zone .......but the buses are a whole new ball game...I love them....just have to remember the number and if you get lost you only need get on the same number bus and you will land up back where you started.....so I will happily go bus hopping.....and its great way to get the true feel of the area your holidaying in .....tweetie

Malta has a great bus service..we use it all the time..loads of fun..but the busses can sometimes be very stuffy, especially if you are in the old style ones. The Old Malta buses are being done away with now so there are alot of newer ones with Air con....or they just drive with all the windows open and i try and strategically position myself. We also visit Gozo alot so we are forever to-ing and fro-ing on that.

In Thailand, we used Tuk Tuk's quite abit and also braved the sky trains in Bangkok. very clean and easy to use.

Maltese buses are about to change beyond recognition! The new 10 year franchise is about to be awarded and the preferred bidder is none other than your very own British Arriva who will be sending out a load of the bendy buses that confused Londoners (especially Boris) so much. Except that by then they probably won't be British as Deutsche Bahn is about to buy them if nothing goes wrong in the next week. You thought using public transport was complicated - try keeping up with who owns what!

I use it quite often in Tunisia. The train from Tunis to Sousse is very easy except for the steep steps to get on it if you have a heavy suitcase. On a cruise we called into Tunis and it cost under £2 for 5 of us on the train from the port to the town, whereas the cruise company were charging a small fortune. On the local bus from Sousse to Mahdia I spent the time being fed chocolate biscuits by a couple of small children whilst their father tried practising his English and French on me - journey time 1.5 hours and fare just over 50p.

We have allways hired a car but in the last year cost have shot up and we have used buses .We found the busses and the tram in Benidorm and Alicanti so easy and cheap.Remember that you may be in a crowd and watch you bags and wallets.

that last point is very wise, two hotspots for tourist crime being Barcelona and Rome. There is a trick on the Barcelona metro for someone in front of you going up the escalator to suddenly stop and bend down as he gets off (like doing a shoe lace). You crash into him and as you are about to fall his friend appears and grabs you to save you - and in doing so dips your pocket.

In dodgy places, bags with valuables are best round the neck towards the front not slung over one shoulder or on the back. Pay attention to how the locals go about it - if they are clutching everything to their chests take it as a warning!

Not really. In Thailand we use the baht buses and tuk tuk's, but that's about it. I don't suppose that's classed as public transport, though!?
