I went to this hotel on a late deal about 13 years ago, so things could have dramatically changed, but it was quite isolated only a small bar opp the hotel, so had to stay in the hotel most nights. There was a bus service outside the hotel to Funchal about 20 min bus ride
The hotel and grounds were pleasant, unfortunetly when we went in Nov time it had the worst storms they had seen for years, so it clouded our experience in Maderia.
I have spoken to people who love Maderia, may be some day I will try again
