Hey all,
We're off to visit a relative in Donegal for 5 days in October. We're taking the car so can travel around a bit when we're there. First time ive ever been to ireland so i was wondering if anyone knew of anything to do in Donegal/surrounding area?
My OH is originally from Donegal but hasnt been back for around 20 years, and he is making me worried by telling me theres no main roads, only dirt tracks etc. The relative in Ireland has assured me its not like that anymore and that OH is just winding me up with his memories of old-days, but i cant help worrying!
If theres anywhere we can drive to for an interesting day out then at least we wont be bored stiff for 5 days!

Hi GG ... I'm sure there are plenty of narrow lanes and dirt tracks in the more remote parts of the county, but some of the main roads around Donegal are better than you would find in the UK. Where exactly are you going to be based, is it Donegal Town, or somewhere else in County Donegal ?
Lots of interesting and beautiful places to drive around where you can do for instance the Atlantic Drive Blood Foreland that is in the north of the County and then there are the Rosses and Glen Columcille where there is a very interesting cottage industry and a lovely old outside and inside museum with the origional thatched cottages. Then you can go west through Donegal Town and beyond to the border with Sligo! Glenties Killebegs with the Fishing harbour and so on and so on.
Letterkenny Interesting museum and Cathedral etc
Where are you staying? If you want scenery? Historic places? plenty of Pubs and Restaurants with good quality of food etc. You want to find some Pub with traditional music and there will be plenty of talented Musicians and singers. Be warned Ireland is much more expensive for alcohol and eating out etc. Mind you with food you often get huge portions!
If you let me know where you are staying I will try to give you some more info
As for the roads you always know when you are over the Border into NI as the roads are full of pot holes in contrast to the South. Also you will see many beautiful large houses built all over the County some like Southfork!! Again once you cross the border you return to similar to the UKJ.

I got to Donegal every Friday and I can tell you the roads there are better than the ones in NI the little town we go to has 9 bars and 5 hotels and the nicest beaches you have even seen ..colleen
