Part of the confusion I think is with the terminology, legal drinking age is 16 i.e. when a child (young adult) is out with a parent they may have alcohol purchased for them by their parent with a meal, the legal purchasing age is 18 if they want to purchase alcohol themselves, yes it used to be 16 it is now 18.

Whether you choose to accept that or not is entirely up to you, but the facts are there.

Just for your information, the legal age for purchasing alcohol in the UK is 18, but you can drink on licensed premises at 16 as part of a meal and accompanied by someone over 18.
