ace,

I wouldn't worry too much about having a lesson. After 5 minutes in the car, you'll be fine. The hardest thing is remembering you need to be on the right and not forgetting about getting in to the passenger side! After the first day, it'll be second nature. Driving a left hand drive car is the same as a right hand drive other than the gear stick and hand brake being on the other side. Just have 5 minutes in the car before you set off getting used to where everything is then take it easy for the first few miles and have your route planned so you can concentrate on your driving. As you come up to junctions, everything will soon make sense so I wouldn't worry about having a lesson.

Dont worry too much, I drove for the fisrt time this year on the right of the road and it was fine.

You may find you bash your left hand on the door of the car a few times when you try to change gear but you will get used to it ;-)
The only thing I found was that I kept going a bit too close on the left side so make sure you line yourself up with the white line in the middle and you will be fine, everything else just comes naturally.

I thought this was a wind up when I saw the words driving lessons in the Turkey forum... Set me thinking and I have never seen anyone with L plates in the resorts I have been to or indeed in Istanbul. Does anyone know if they run a similar type system like we have in the UK ? I also agree with the others and I wouldn't pay for a lesson. It is quite remarkable how quickly you adapt to driving on the other side.

They do have driving lessons in Turkey but where my husband learnt they have a driving lesson centre so they don't actually learn to drive on the road - very bizarre way of learning to my mind! When my husband took his driving test in the UK he was very surprised that you can actually go out on the road to learn.

They also learn basic car maintenance and first aid and have to do a very thorough written test on these things in order to pass.

Thank you all for your advice. I feel better about this now.
