On Trevor McDonald last Monday. A travel expert implied there are three types of holiday. Package Holiday, DIY and a dynamic package.
I think this later is when you take 2 or more components ie flight and hotel from one company like Thomson or OTBeach.com
What I really want to know, particularly in relation to Thomson, as you can often get the same hotel and flight cheaper than on a package is what level of protection you get if things go wrong? ie how does it differ if at all from a standard package holiday?
Thanks to anyone who replies.
Edit:Mark I'm not sure this is in the right place perhaps it should be in DIY
Chris . just to follow on a bit .My confirmation email from thomson refers me to the main terms and conditions on the thomson site so im still none the wiser yet. With the "whole shabang " package which i clicked on via that just the bits you want link it wasnt priced seperately (couldnt seem to do that for the coral) it just came up with a package price including free transfers but by clicking on this link instead of the normal "thomson sun holidays" it worked out about £100 cheaper overall . so not a vast difference . then it let me put in the promo code as usual. there was an option to change your flight tho. so although im no expert I feel as tho i have booked a proper package as the components were not priced seperately . I could be completely wrong though.
That's what I was worried about. Particularly when you book through Thomson. It does feel as though you have booked a package.
I am not sure what real difference it makes even if it is a 'dynamic package' rather than a 'standard package' holiday? I'm interested in booking this way as you can save money but I wish someone could let me know the implications if any. I'm wondering if it's more like a DIY but feels like a package because we think of thomson as a package tour company?
I think I should have put this in DIY rather than amongst the Crocs and Primark. trust me to put it in the wrong place.
If it has let you put in a promo code it might be a standard package covered by the package tour regs as when I tried to price flight and accommodation seperately there was no space for a promo code.
Can't beleive you spent 5 hours on there your eyes must have been out on stalks.

ps . my confirmation email from thomson also says this :Your booking is ATOL protected. Your contract is with TUI UK Limited, Wigmore House, Wigmore Place, Wigmore Lane, Luton, LU2 9TN, ATOL No. 2524.
Hi as long as the company doing the dynamic packaging has an atol license you are covered the same as a package holiday.
The website they showed briefly when talking about Dynamic Packages was definitely travel republic (I definitely spend too much time looking at holidays! )
Very envious Lyn - I do that with hubby as well. Bore him about talking about a holiday until he says "well if it is a good deal, go and book it'
They had an accommodation on there that wasn't even available through their main package bit. It was somewhere called 'the ocean club' that I stayed at 10 years ago and I really fancied it but there was a lot of stuff about if you booked it you couldnt change anything, as I think they are time shares and thomson must book direct with various owners.
But as I first selected the thomsonfly flights to faro and then the accommodation it felt like I was booking a package.
What I really wanted was the flexibility to change for a 25 pound per person ammendment fee, but couldnt see if I had this. It's mainly dates that worry me when I book early incase I can't get away when I thought I could.
I wish I knew what they were. Because to me if the difference is a small amount and it's an expensive holiday I would probably pay a bit extra for the package to be on the safe side.
I think I read a bit about Dymanic packages in the travel bit of the sat telegraph the other week I might go on their web-site later and see if I can find it, but got to go out soon.

To be on the safe side maybe it's better paying by Credit card as long as the transaction is over £100??
