Plain sailing for easyCruisers
Stelios Haji-Ioannou, the founder of low-budget airline easyJet, has announced that prices for his easyCruise ( http://www.easycruise.com ), the first no-frills charter due to take to the seas next summer, will be as cheap as £14.50pp per night - but only if passengers agree to clean their own cabins.
EasyCruise passengers will also have to supply their own bedding and toiletries, or buy them onboard. An optional surplus of £20 will be charged for housekeeping.
"There was a time when you started a cruise at point A, stayed on for a week and got off at point B. But we don't have to do it that way anymore," said Stelios.
Rather than pay for the round trip, easyCruise passengers will be able to choose how many nights they wish to travel, and hop on and off as they please.
EasyCruise will visit three countries and 14 cities in a 14-day round trip. The route will take in Nice, Barcelona, Majorca, Ibiza, Malaga, Corsica, Rome and Naples - Mediterranean resorts easily served by the existing easyJet network.
"We think that with so many low-cost flights heading towards the Mediterranean, we can attract enough people," said Stelios, dismissing the suggestion that easyCruise will be little more than a glorified ferry. "We will not take cars or lorries," he said.
The cabins will be trialled this summer in London as part of a sister-project, easyHotel, currently being built in Finland. Rates for easyHotel could be as cheap as £5 per room (housekeeping extra), but an average price will be £35 per night.
EasyCruise and easyHotel are among a flotilla of planned easyProjects, including easyBus and easyPizza, on their way soon.

Who wants to clean their own cabins, carry bed linen in your case - might as well stay in a caravan !! When I cruise I want spoiling, pampering, service.
ps Without being sexist girls who will be the ones doing the cleaning ???

This will be more like a ferry trip than a cruise. I was thinking this might be a way of connecting to some cruise only deals which start from ports not serviced by cheap airlines. Last time this came up he was talking £30.
Did anyone see the CNBC report over the weekend about segmentation in the cruse industry i missed it but Stelios was supposed to have been interviewed.

Stelios acquires EasyCruise ship
Stelios Haji-Ioannou has reportedly sold some four million shares in EasyJet to pay for a 'shopping spree' - a cruise ship, a hotel and 10 minibuses.
Having raised some £14 million from the sale, he assured shareholders: "I have not sold out of EasyJet and do not intend to sell out."
Mr Haji-Ioannou is now aiming his sights firmly on the cruise market with EasyCruise, another "no-frills" company that will charge passengers extra for "luxuries" like bedding and housekeeping.
He has acquired the ship Renaissance 2, which had operated for US line Renaissance Cruises, which folded in 2001.
Reports today suggest that 14-day cruises, taking in destinations including Nice, Rome and Corsica, could cost as little as £14.50 per night. Passengers will be able to join and leave the ship as they wish from next year.
Mr Haji-Ioannou is quoted as saying: "It will be aimed at people in the twenties, thirties and forties who would not normally consider going on a cruise."
Bryony Coulson, general manager of PSARA, the Passenger Shipping Association's retail agents' scheme, welcomed the EasyJet founder's move into the cruise sector.
She said: "From an industry perspective it has to be good news because it will open up the market to a new group of passengers. Stelios has obviously seen the growth potential that exists in cruising and is approaching it in an innovative way."
She added that Mr Haji-Ioannou could be the first offer dynamic packaging in the cruise market.
"He has been talking about doing this for quite some time by breaking down the package into different components such as paying separately for food, cabin service etc."
Plans are also coming on well for Easyhotel.com, which will reportedly be launched later this year in south-west London. Guests at the hotel, which has rooms "only nine times the size of a phone box", will have to bring their own sheets and toiletries.

Not sure when it will be broadcast...prob Autumn or winter schedules...
13/09/2004 SKY ONE COMMISSIONS TWOFOUR TO FOLLOW THE LAUNCH OF EASYCRUISE
Twofour Productions has won its first major commission from Sky One to make a series which will go behind the scenes of the development and launch of easyGroup's latest venture, easyCruise. Filming starts this month on nineteen hours of programming which will air on Sky One, Sky One Mix and Sky Travel in 2005. Twofour will accompany serial entrepreneur Stelios Haji-Ioannou as he sets up his new easyCruise business. The programmes will uncover the secrets of Stelios's success and show how he can take an industry, shake it up and turn it into an exciting, new and affordable experience for his customers. And he'll be making TV stars of his staff and the 180 passengers of the first cruise in the process.
"This is a very exciting project for us," said Twofour's Charles Wace, "as we know that Stelios is keen to do to the cruise market what he did to airlines." Stelios added: "I am looking forward to working with Twofour and creating a warts-and-all TV series. I think it will be very entertaining and will show the viewing public how we have changed the relatively formal cruise industry into a fun, city-hopping by sea experience"
22/09/2004 FILMING FOR EASYCRUISE SERIES BEGINS
Filming on the new easyCruise series for Sky One started last week. Producer Charles Wace and director Neil Edwards travelled to Singapore to follow Stelios Haji-Ioannou's negotiations with three shipyards for the multi-million pound refit of the easyCruise ship.

I just had a thought on the big ships the life boats carry almost as many passengers as this first easy ship.
Ooooh that should be an interesting series! I don't watch Sky much, although hubby does, so I hope it's widely advertised.

http://www.easycruise.com/ is now showing itinery and pricing info going on sale a the end of Jan for May.
Pricing is £30pppn(starting price) with a cabin cleaning fee(I read this would be £20) and food on a PAYG. So if you can feed yourself for less than £20 a day it will hit the £50pppn target. You can certainly beat that with a deal on say Island Escape off season(£300-£400 including flights/transfere for 7nights).
Itinery keeps you close to Nice or Genoa airports so handy for a shorter trip fitting in a few of the ports but I guess the weekend room rates could be a bit higher than £30pp.
Oh you need to like ORANGE.

Hi WJ
I still can't see this working.....
Suddenly it's over £400. That would be ok maybe if high season or warm part of summer at least.
Anyone know where the boat goes in the winter??
Will meals be buffet style (eg £10 per meal)?
Is there a pool etc on this boat?
Drinks may well be bumped up in price like they are on planes!
Bump for title change: Now taking bookings.
No-frills cruise line easyCruise has opened online bookings for sailings in the Mediterranean this summer.
The latest venture from easyJet founder Stelios Haji-Ioannou is offering prices ranging from £59 to £159 depending on the grade of accommodation via its website http://www.easyCruise.com.
The first sailing is due on June 3 but the date may be brought forward to April 29 subject to the early completion of refurbishment to the line's ship easyCruiseOne. The cruises will run until October 15.
The 170-passenger vessel is offering accommodation in three categories: 72 standard double cabins, six quadruple cabins and four suites with balconies. All cabins except the suites are internal with no windows.
Passengers will be charged an optional 15 euros to have their cabin cleaned with new bedding and towels but they will not be required to clean cabins themselves as first reports suggested.
Facilities on board the 15 year old vessel, which will be painted in distinctive Easygroup orange, include a cafe, sports bar, tapas bar and an outdoor six-person whirlpool bath.
The vessel will sail between the South of France and Italy, allowing passengers to stay on board for between two nights and two weeks. Ports of call include St Tropez, Cannes, Nice, Monaco, Imperia (for San Remo), Genoa and Portofino.
The ship will arrive at each destination at lunchtime and will depart in the early hours of the following morning, allowing passengers to take in the nightlife of each port of call.
The concept is designed to appeal to independently-minded passengers in their 20's, 30's and 40's who have not previously considered going on a conventional cruise, according to easyCruise.
"The flexible one-week itineraries allow you to embark and depart at any port on the route provided you stay on board at least two nights," the company said.

It'll never catch on - mind you I said the same about mobile phones and internet - it goes to show what I know
a cruise ship?! Also have you had a look at the bedrooms. I think that is taking the orange theme a little to far. It'd be like sleeping in the reactor room at Chernobyl
All joking aside I suspect Easycruise will do well with younger passengers wanting a couple of nights on a boat while backpacking in Europe and it'd be ideal for getting away for a short break, especially when the airports are served by the low cost carriers.
From the looks of it anyone who has been on a standard cruise will be disappointed, but i suspect it will attract a different customer who would otherwise not be cruising.
I've just had a look at the website. Can they really call that boat ![](/storage/forum/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

The QE2 can be cheaper if booked properly.
Will this ever be a success? I cannot see how. Perhaps it will join easy cinemas and car hire as a huge flop.
Correct me if I am wrong but are the cabin prices shown per cabin and not per person, making it cheaper the more of you share which would indeed suit the younger end of the market who are used to Easyjet
Food ? £30 per day each? Dont know but could put £120 on making a total of £438 per 2 days/2 people which is £110 per person per day, £770 per week which will get you quite a good conventional cruise.
Anyway we'll see.
Just visited there website and was not impressed. The ship lokks more like a ferry to me , no pool but they have got a 6 person jacuzzi , hope everyone does not want to use it at once. By the time you have paid for flights , transfers, food and drink you would be much better off booking a decent cruise ship I like Stellios and have met him a few times but really dont think this can work for him unless he is able to say half the price he charges and provide garunteed cheap flight links with easy jet and cheap/free transfers from easyjet flights , then he may just be onto a winner. Also we know ORANGE is his colour but he must appreciate it may not be to everyones taste to have bright orange rooms. Hope he can make this work though as he is a thoroughly good bloke. Pat
Do you think we'll get the easy cruise reality tv show to go with their Airline programmes?
It is in the FAQs on the website that sky tv will be on board filming right from the launch onwards. If you dont want to be filmed it says you dont have to be. Maybe I should book up and get my 15 mins of fame. Pat
think the costs with this are way to high as looked at it this weekend, and for the same dates as i am off on the MSC melody (dep 4 july) they wanted more that i have seen the melody priced at........and the melody included flights! the main easy jet web site aslo said that there was a charge for cabin cleaning at the end of your stay could not see a mention of this on the cruise site, guess one is wrong, nor could i find the arrival and departure times for the ship.
