Thanks Darren - great web site with lots of info. Looking forward to trying those restuarants and exploring Eastern Crete - Stayed in West Crete 3 years ago - planning trips using local buses and walking ! Only downside at present is that Thomas Cook have changed our day time flights to 11pm out and 4.oo am back (five months after we booked the holiday) From what I read we are not the only ones. Any good beaches you can recomend? thanks :

There are two in Elounda, both narrow and flat. The first one is the sandier of the two and has the pedalos on it. It's the busier and larger. The second one is more stoney. There are a few very, very small inlets further along to Plaka that are, again, pebbley.

On the other side of the canal area, on the "island" there is a very nice beach (so I'm told) that gets the boat trips on some days. It's clear on googleearth.

In Plaka the beach is made up of large stones and shelves steeply. Nice though.

We go to a small beach in Mochlos, a 40 min car journey away. Tiny but very sandy and with some very nice tavernas.

Hersonissos (never spell that corectly) has great beaches. Some nice beaches further round from Ag Nik.

Thanks Darren for all your information - looking forward to getting a bit of Greek sun. We are staying at Lena's Apartments - Mxed reviews on Forums (Booked last September and was the only place we could get in) . Planning to use local buses to go to Sitia and Lerapetra and see a bit of the countryside.
