Hello mirage, First if you are going to hire a car you can get to see more places than with the local bus, second I always do my own excursions and would not use the tour firms as they are twice as dear as you can do them yourself.
These are some of the trips we will do when we are in Albufeira this year.
Local Bus Trips, Faro great day out Old Town/ Cathedral/ Museum Maritimo/Museum Arqueologico set in a old convert/ Church do Carmo with its chapel of the bones and nice cafes round by the harbour, Silves with its Castle/ Cathedral Museum Municipal de Arqueologia with its Moorish well and parts of the old town walls with great views over the town and river/ river side cafes with great chicken pire-pire.
Poutimao great for shopping then on to Praia da Rocha great beach and a look round this holiday town.
If you hire a car you could try some of these.
Tavira nice town with old castle nice riverside walks with lots of cafes and lot of churches, from here you could then go to Castro Marim with its big old castle over looking Spain and salf plans with lots of bird life if you like birds. Or perhaps Vila Real da Santo Antonio a town built a bit like Lisbon and with a ferry over to Spain.
If you go the other way from Albufiera you could go to Lagos a walled town lots of history here and then on to the end of the world (before the new world was found) Cape St Vincent or go up the coast to Aljezur another old Moorish village with a old castel up a big hill.

There are lots more than this but you may only have ment things like water parks I think there are four of then but this should give you a bit of a idea for some were to go if you like a bit of history, take a look at this site and click on the Algarve to lots of places.
