Hi all,
We have been going to Portugal for the past couple of years. In the first year we went to Albufeira and absolutley loved The Old Town. In the second year we went to Alvor where we found it a little too quiet (although lovely and quaint). Sorry to mention Portugal in a Greece forum but I felt I just needed to inform you as to what we liked and didn't like to give you an idea.
My question is where would you recommend we go bearing in mind we have a 12 year old child who likes the swimming pool, trips out and generally being kept occupied. Happy kid = happy parents! As for us two adults we would like to see some nice scenery/beaches and sample some of the local traditional food. We like to be near other Brits but in traditional restaurants. I guess that's what we liked about Albufeira. Many were British people having a great time in traditional Portuguese restaurants.
Your advice is very much appreciated and we will consider any Greek island or the mainland itself.
TIA,
DDM.
Try Parga on the mainland, ticks all the boxes you mentioned.
Thanks for your reply. Would there be enough things to do in Parga for the 12 years old and also would there be plenty of bars/restaurants for us which would also cater for the kid? Also what would be the cheapest way of getting there? Package or DIY? I don't know how far it is from Athens (I know a few of the cheap airlines fly there). I'll consider package or DIY although I usually do DIY as we can pick the accommodation ourselves etc. Would it be best to book the flight/accommodation now or wait until nearer the time? We're looking at going at the end of July/beginning of Aug 2007.
http://www.parga .com and ask all you want you'll soon get all the replies you want, theres photos of it ect ect. Also try Stoupa on the mainland http://www.zorba.de/
Plenty to do in Parga and plenty of fantastic tavernas, go on
It has to be the Kefalos resort on Kos, go self catering though. most places have pools for the kids and nowhere is more that 10 mins walk from the beach. great food, great hospitality! if you hire a car you can drive to the other end of the island in 30 minutes, there are water parks, and kos town is alot livier for shopping should you wish!
Have a look at Zante. We stayed in Kalamaki this year and loved it. Great beach, plenty of bars and restaurants, lots of trips available too. We also found the prices very reasonable compared to other islands. We're off to Parga next June for out honeymoon (booked with First Choice). Good luck, Cejay
Or Kefalonia - resort of Skala - excellent beach, once again with watersports and great restaurants.
Both islands have airports, go independent with XL and find accommodation on these websites. And hire a car or jeep to explore and enjoy the scenery.
Greece is just excellent for all ages.
Have a look at photos of both islands and reviews on http://www.ClearSpray.co.uk
The bus service is excellent, 1.40 euros for the whole trip. Tavernas are good. Try the Dolphin ferry to the other Sporades. The Marine Park is worth a visit.
The 5 minute transfer from the airport to the Town is wonderful with children even if the runway is shorter than a cricket pitch.
