I know that his isn't strictly to do with holidays, But I thought I might share this with those interested in air travel . I work in an Oxfam bookshop and today I found, in a box of donated books, a Bradshaw's International Air Guide dating from 1934. It's packed with information that an air traveller of that time would need. There are complete time-tables and fares for all routes flying from Europe, plus other data and a route map.
For instance, there were over 130 places served from London (Croydon) and an extensive internal network . This includes services from Bournemouth to Weymouth and a service from London to the Isle of Wight. There was also an extensive network of European flights plus some transcontinental ones to such places as India and South Africa. These latter took several days because they included overnight stops in hotels.
As for fares , they were very high. For instance London-Paris was £33 return and London-Singapore £180 single. Don't forget that the average wage at this time was about £2 a week. As for the book, I have just valued similar ones on the internet and it is worth over £200, because of its rarity value and the historical information it contains.
Fascinating to read that London-Paris was £33 - very similar prices these days. Although I wish you could still get to Singapore for £360 return! (mind you, just booked a client for £500 return - so maybe fares haven't altered that much)
I made a mistake with the London - Paris fare. It was actually just under £8 but that still represented a month's wages for the average person. The London- Singapore fare of £180 single included the price of six overnight hotels plus food for the whole seven days. This amounted to nearly two year's wages for an average person.
