I have had some fantastic dishes on my travels. What have been your favourites. I'll start with breakfast!
It was banana rotis in Penang. On our first morning we went to this place with a corrugated iron roof( The Net- is it still there?) and ordered the rotis, freshly made lime juice and coffee. Delicious. We were given the bill by the young son and, just after we handed over the money, we worked out that it was only a pound! At this point all hell broke out as mum fell out with the son, came over to us and ...................................................
apologised as he had overcharged!!!
We had many more breakfasts there!
My favourite has to be fresh coconut. I don't think anything beats sipping the milk straight out of the shell through a straw and then chomping on the sweet flesh that you've scooped out with a spoon - great for cooling you down on a hot day.
Satay...of the Malay/Indonesian type rather than the Thai. I was brought up on the stuff visiting Bedok Corner in Singapore and getting the Satay off an old guy's little wooden stall. Complete with cucumber and onion, and the peanut sauce in an old Ideal cream tin. Yum!
Banana pancakes in Thailand are to die for , chicken satay, and my good old favourite- pad thai - can't wait to get to Bangkok just to taste it again.
Mango and sticky rice
nasi lemak in malaysia....and durian!
we finally tried durian in Vietnam- I won't be trying it again!
You just have to put a peg on your nose and eveything's OK
But satay is fantastic too!
Ice cream in bread that has been soaked in egg then fried quickly, to finish it off syrup poured over the top.
Really good for the diet- something you must try if you are in Batu Ferringhi.mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmemories.
Beef Rendang- had this in Singapore
Tom Kha Gai- (chicken and coconut soup)
I do my own versions of these at home.
Oh, Fiona, don't mention beef rendang...I want some NOW! Had it in Borneo and Hong Kong and I just love it! I also love anything Thai with plenty of chillies in it...just don't tell them you want it "phet phet" or it'll take the skin off the roof of your mouth!!
Thanks Fiona, I must try that!! I can almost taste it now....
I don't believe it - another of my favourites! ( Now where did I put my recipe!! )
Massman curry...reminds me we have a tub of the paste in the fridge that needs consuming by November...trouble is the instructions are in Thai.
but it wouldn't matter Sunbear! If you add the quantity they suggest on the English version you would be in the middle of a sauna!
True Fiona.
I like that too! Oh dear- I just seem to like food in general! My first chicken in pandanas leaves was a lunchtime at the Marriot in Hua Hin- delicious!
