Firstly i'd like to say what a great community this is, I stumbled across these forums accidently, and i'm glad I did, some very useful information to be read here.

Back on topic...

I am planning on taking my girlfriend to the Domincan Republic sometime in June this year for her 21st birthday but have no experience or knowledge about the island. We have never been to the Caribbean before so do not know what to expect. This is where you come in (hopefully) to give me some insight about the place and where to go.

Questions...

Is there any places within walking distance from a 'hotel' where we can browse shops?
Is there any places to avoid?
Should we be worried about bugs and sand fleas?
Is there any medical precautions to take before going?
Is there security issues and should we purchase a safe when we get there?
What excursions should we look out for that are unmissible?
Should we be worried about weather conditions in June?

Accommodation specifics...

We would like to have the white sands and clear ocean
It is only the two of us going both aged early 20's
Prefer to have at least a 4 star rating accommodation
Have about £2000 to spend on accommodation (give or take)
