What made us pick Bulgaria? Quite simply an advert on Radio Clyde about a wee boy who had just returned from a holiday with his family and he was having an argument with his teacher over 1 + 1, he said the teacher was wrong in her response that 1+1 = 2 because when they were in Bulgaria 1+1 = 4, my ears picked up to this response and it captured my imagination and thus the story begins in October 1989.
We flew from Glasgow to Burgas and arrived at an airport that looked like something out of the 50's until you got through and met your Balkantourist rep who handed you an envelope containing meal vouchers for each member of the party. You were then directed to your coach that would take you and your luggage through to the resorts, although on the road from Burgas to Sunny Beach the bus came to a sudden stop as a Lada had overturned on the road in front of us, or so we thought! No sooner and the bus driver and rep left the bus than we were presented with a new face teaching you the Bulgarian words for Hello (YOU WANT CHANGE MONEY!!!!!!), after the business had been concluded the driver and rep helped the car owner turn the Lada back on to it's wheels and off it went and we were back on the black winding road, with no lights and white bands round the trees heading for Sunny Beach.
We had picked the Hotel Continental Central as our base, and never expected what awaited us, when we arrived at Reception we were greeted with 2 smiling faces one of the Receptionist Tina and the porter who unfortunately we can not name as he had a nice little sideline which we were still to find out about. Once we had our keys the porter offered to help us carry our cases to room 211, where to our surprise he again taught us the Bulgaria for Hello, at twice the amount being given as part of the currency bonus scheme this meant we received 8 times our money (90 levs for £10). We thought we would head down to the bar for a drink and take a look in the Corecom to get an idea of where we were and what we could get, for £10 we managed to get 1 skin of Coke, 1 skin of Heinken Beer, 1 carton of John Player Special, 1 2lt Bottle of Vodka but with the lack of currency our change was 1 bar of Toblerone and three small sweets (not bad for a tenner).
The next morning breakfast was a shock but we soon learned how to ask Anton or Peter in the day bar for what we wanted although it took a little getting used too, but we found sharing vodka or two with them got you a long way and still does to this day! Like everyone else we thought we would explore and found that the resort was a little limited in pools and facilities for children, however the beach and Chicken George's Bar just opposite the Burgas Hotel became a haven as did the kid's club. No sooner had we arrived but our time was over, and we were leaving behind a number of new friends, as soon as we arrived back in Glasgow we were certain of one thing the journey wasn't over it was only just beginning and the misses was in the Travel Agents booking our next adventure and here we are 19 years and 30 trips later and we wouldn't change a thing. We've seen some of the most amazing sites in Sofia, Varna, Balchik, Plovdiv, Pomorie, Nessebar, Burgas, Atos, Sliven and Stara Zagora. Although, now we like to find places away from the hustle of Sunny Beach where the family can sit and drink a few Rakia's together and where our friends can visit us and stay if necessary.
what lovely memories you have Just out of interest, which do you prefer- Bulgaria then or now?
We preferred then but now for the friends we've gained and got to know as time has gone on! But be prepared the story could continue with a look into the years after communisim.
Very interesting, thank you for taking the time to post your lovely tale.
I'd love to hear more.
To carry on the memories, when we got home and decided to go back to Bulgaria for the next visit we thought that two weeks just was not long enough so we asked about a three weeks holiday, imagine the surprise to find that we got a cheaper deal for three weeks (free child place) so it was time to look forward to june 1990. well june arrived and we were off again to the Continental not much has changed still looks the same most of the staff are still the same so was just like going home, upto the bar to say hello to Anton and Petko at night say hello to Sanka. go for Dinner to the Globus Hotel with Eveta the receptionist and her cousin polly. The Globus restraunt was one of the best in the resort at the time started to order the meal and enjoy the atmosphere at the time the entertainment in the Globus used to be a four part orchestral band, yes Cello,Violin ,piano ,and a clarinet player after the meal was finished and the bill arrived the shock came, I had a short discussion with the waiter Stefan over the cost of the meal for five people he wanted the very high price of 50 lev. this seemed crazy for what we had eaten as we had had a varied selection from the menu including Caviar also drinking Champagne and Rakia after the short exchange of words we agreed he had not forgotten to charge us for anything so we were quite happy to pay him and with the tip the bill came to less than a tenner(try and eat that now). we had discovered that the bigger and better the restraunt or hotel the cheaper it seemed to be to eat there. Still not a lot to do in the resort for kids so enrolled Stephi in the kids club where Jen from Newcastle took good care of her during the day, she came back one day and said there must be a giant in the resort as she had seen his footprints, we found out that the giant prints led you to the Variety Bar and the beach at the back of it , this led us to finding another great restraunt the Casino which was just opposite the Globus where the mini train used to depart from in both directions, many a great meal was had there again the prices were crazy and seemed to be cheaper the more you ate . But because we wanted to see more of the Country this started us visiting the town of Pomorie where by now we had made many friends who worked in the resort, at this time you could get a taxi driver who would take you out to the town and make arrangements to come back and pick you up later at night, at the time we could get out to Pomorie and back for about £8 many a great night was spent there and the story only gets better .
What an interesting report.
Like you we have been visiting Bulgaria for many years. On our first visit way back in the 1990s I couldnt wait to get home and tell family friends about our trip. We just loved it. Everyone thought we were mad going there in the first place!
Four of us flew out in the month of May with Balkan, first flight of the season. We had booked to go to Golden Sands - the Chouchouliga Hotel (now Primasol). When we were boarding the transfer bus to go to the hotel the rep informed us we were being moved to the Zlatna Kotva Hotel. There were so few people flying out to the resort that Balkan had decided to congegrate everyone in the same couple of hotels on the beachfront as opposed to being scattered all over the resort (lots of hotels in woodlands there).
There was only 2 swimming pools and hardly anything was opened with it being so early in the season. Every day told a story but we just enjoyed everything about the place. We laughed about the little old ladies eeking out a piece of toilet paper in return for money in the plate. Laughed about the way everyone from these little old ladies, to your waiter to the lifeguards always whispering "change money". Men used to appear out of the woods, from behind trees desperate to
do a deal. Laughed about the different head movements. Whilst there we made friends with other holidaymakers and would often eat out in the evening with them. Never did we all get our first choice of food as there was never enough for everyone and veal seemed to be the old stand by.
I also remember being taken aback as to what was happening right in front of our eyes in our hotel bar with the "ladies" and their pimps. It was quite blatant and my sister in law and I reckoned there were far more "ladies of the night" than tourists in the hotel. After a while it really doesnt bother you.
We love Bulgaria and the Bulgarian people and I just love hearing of peoples experiences. Sad to say though I have met quite a few people who have visited and said they would never return. Personally I can' t really understand why !
I too have some very happy memories of the Zlatna Kotva(golden Anchor). One I would prefer to forget is being plied with large amounts of Vodka and cake by the chambermaid in their room BEFORE BREAKFAST.
Of course!
I believe that the Zlatna Kotva hotel is now apartments as is the Sirena next door. Loved both of these hotels.
On our first stay there we couldn't remember how to get an outside line and the number to 'knock off' so asked her, this was in the early evening, she was staggered we knew some Bulgarian. She sorted us, then immediately after we had phoned our friend in Varna to say we had arrived safe she dragged us into their den & insisted we shared their meal and a little liquid refreshment. That was the first of many meetings.
