Hi, my girlfriend and I are planning a holiday in Tunisia in september, and we're a bit unsure of where to go. We're not wanting to sit on a beach for a week, we want to go a bit more sight seeing style.
We had thought about Djerba although it doesnt sound like there is a lot there, it does seem close for some of the south tunisia sights, and since I want to go to at least one Star Wars location it seemed like a good choice.
The nice lady in the travel agents told us that Hammamet was the place to go for this but I dont think she is right, we would like to get away from the huge tourist areas to some where a little quieter, but still be able to stay in a 4* hotel, and see the history ect of Tunisia.
Any help people could give me would be a great help.
Thank you
Where ever you stay in Tunisia you will have to travel to some of the sights. Unlike for example, Luxor, (where most sights are close) most worthy of a visit are some distances apart. Consider staying midway - Sousse. From there you can get to places in the south and (by train) Tunis/Bardo/Carthage etc.
Yes Sousse is busy and touristy but staying here would just be a base.
Staying on Djerba puts you out of the way for some of the interesting sights in the north of the country.
Any questions please ask

i have been to tunisia twice, staying in monastir and once in hammamet.
the only thing in monastir is the old town (not much to see), hotels, the beach and the airport!!! hammamet was very touristy but there was lots to see and do - carthageland was fun, it is a tunisian hannibal styled theme park (the rides were better than expected and the water rides were cooling and refreshing). wherever you stay in tunisia you will be able to find lots of great trips - most of them require a degree of travel anyway. book excursions at the hotel, they are much cheaper than with the reps.
Have a look at the following website for an idea of various places you might like to visit:
