katielind,

It'll be a couple of months yet I should imagine, probably around June. you'll just have to keep checking until they are released.

Cheers darren!

But Blimmey thats only 4 months before we need them! Normally im all booked up and organised at least 6-8 months in advance!!

Ive also noticed in the past when we book holiday connecting flights (normally fly out from Man so use BMIbaby) that if you leave it until a few months before they are really expensive, and i dont want to add more than £150 onto what is already a blooming expensive holiday!

I wonder if it would be worth booking our Abdn - LGW leg just now while they are still cheap, then book the LGW - Abdn leg when they are released??

Does that make it any more expensive to book two one way trips rather than a return trip??

katielind,

That's what I would suggest; if the outbound flight is cheap at the moment, I'd book it now and once the inbound flight becomes available, book that. With most low cost carriers, when you book return flights you are in fact booking two seperate ones, but on the same booking so it shouldn't make much of a difference price wise.

Ok, Cool thats what i will do, when i looked yesterday the outbound was about £10 each, up to about £70 by the time they add all the tax etc!!!

Once thats done then i will feel at least half organised!

Also doing it that way leaves us free to fly to and from Abdn one way and Inverness the other depending on what is cheapest as we are 50 miles from each airport anyway so 6 and half a doz!

Thanks Darren!

Do any regular FlyBe travellers ever pre-book their seating or is it a case of turning up early-ish (assuming you don't online check in)

Don't particularly want to pay out for £20.00 if it's a needless expense!

JKKne,

Unless you want a specific seat or peace of mind, I'd save your money.

Flybe releases part of winter schedule

Flybe has put part of its 2009/10 winter schedule on sale early.

The expanded schedule, which begins on October 25, includes some 390 flights a week from London Gatwick.

The airline said this early selection of popular winter routes has been released to attract and accommodate those looking for short and weekend breaks especially over the autumn half-term and Christmas periods.

"Flybe recognises that times are tough for travel planning this year with business and leisure travellers alike having to keep a close eye on their budgets," said Mike Rutter, chief commercial officer.

Hi we are planning a trip to Orkney in Sept (5th-8th) and were hoping to get a cheap flight to Inverness and then the ferry from Scrabster-Stromness. However it doesnt appear that there is a flight that would get us there early enough for the ferry crossing at midday. (please correct me if Iam wrong)
The alternative is a Loganair/FlyBe flight from BHX- Aberdeen-Orkney. However I am terrified of small planes, does anyone know what type of plane we would be flying on? My mum lived in Orkney for 20 years and only flew to the mainland once (she would always get the ferry because she said that one flight was so horrendous!) I am blaming her for my fear!
Thanks

stace1983,

Flights From Aberdeen To Orkney Are Operated Useing A Sabb 340, These Used To Be Operated By Loganair Now Operated By FlyBe, They Have 34 Seats.

You Can Book A Through Flight From Birmingham To Orkney. The Birmingham Section Will Be Operated On A Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 (78 Seats, 30" Legroom)

Thanks Gower it looks like the only way we can get there is with FlyBe, :yikes so there is no point in trying to shop around. Any idea if the flight prices will change much between now and sept (they are currently £130 return each)
Thanks

stace1983,

Flight prices can vary and it is all due to supply and demand, £130 return seems reasonable to me(can't realy see it going down from there). The best thing to do, is if you are happy with the price, book it then don't look to see if the price has gone up or down. Then you can't be dissapointed (if that makes sense :duh )

stace1983,

I'll be travelling with Flybe (Loganair) in 3 weeks on a Saab 340B so will report back on what they're like as I've never been on one of them before (the reason for my trip across the Irish Sea!). I'll do my usual trip reports and post some photos. They look to be nice little turbo-props and share the same bongs as my car!! (about the only simalarity between Saab aircraft and cars). Click on my signature for a recent photo. Seating is configured 1-2 with 36 seats.

Thanks darren,
Yes let me know what it is like. I am not a very good flyer at the best of times and have only ever flown on the big airbuses or 747. The idea of being on a little plane is really scaring me to be honest!!

There's nothing to be scared of any more than a bigger plane, and if anything does go wrong they are easier to get off! The only slight "issues" is they don't always have as much cabin baggage space so those wheeled cases designed to within a millimetre of normal spec sometimes have to go in the hold. And they can be a bit noisier when they rev up. But they get in and out of airports quicker so there should be less hanging around. It's almost like getting on and off a bus - especially the time when I used Flybe from BHX and they actually had a bus shelter on the apron!!

As steve8482 says, there's nothing to be scared of. You'll feel the aircraft move around a little more as they are more sensitive to the wind, but it's nothing to worry about. Turbo-props are generally a little noisier and vibrate more (not as bad as piston engines!), but they're just as comfortable and in some cases roomier. They are strict with luggage allowance due to limit storage space. I've flown in much smaller aircraft (8 seats) and had my first flying lesson in a 4 seater PA28-140. Not that's scary, me at the controls!!!!

Thanks for the reassurance guys, I know they are just as safe as the big planes but I think I would still prefer a nice big jumbo!

Darren, I have seen the 8 seaters (no thank you!) and slightly :offtop but my mum lived in Orkney for 20 years and said she often saw the little planes dipping their wheels in to the lakes in order to clean the mud off whilst they were 'hopping' between islands! Not something you would usually expect to see whilst walking the dogs!
