My other half has coeliac and we've been going to Turkey for several years. We actually find that there is a better choice eating out over there than there is here, as they seem to use more fresh, natural products than they do here. You will find a good range of steaks, chicken, casseroles, salads etc. on the menus. He takes a letter translated into Turkish which he got from the Coeliac Society that explains what he can and can't eat, and shows this to the chef if unsure whether a dish is gluten free. He also takes his own bread and pitta bread with him, which he sometimes takes out and they will prepare if for him in a restaurant to go with a meal. In fact he has been known to go into the kitchen and do it himself, and nobody minds as the Turks are very friendly and helpful. As an example, for a snack he will ask them them to put doner meat on his own pitta bread, or ask for an english breakfast without the sausage and toast. I'm sure you will be fine, as the food in Turkey is lovely and the Turks will go out of their way to help you. If you need a copy of the letter I mentioned let me have your email address to send it to. Hope this helps.

Thankyou Plumbud...I am a member of the Coelaic Society, but I never thought of contacting them.
I have an appt with my doctor aswell with regards to taking food abroad, apparently I have to have a medical letter from my doctor.
Im really looking forward to going...although I cant remember where it is.
Do you go self catering yourselves or all inclusive? We are going with other family members and they are wanting to go all inclusive..Im not sure thats an option for me tho.

I tried to pm you but its says I dont have the facility for private messaging!!

As Plumbud said, sure it will be fine, nothing is a problem in Turkey they are very accommodating. A word of caution about AIs' if thats what you choose, some of the cheaper ones are not to be recommended. I believe you get what you pay for from what I have heard, we know people who've stayed in cheap ones, and the food has been very limited and bland, that they ate out all the time.
Eating out is reasonably priced, with lots of choice, so you shouldn't have a problem. Meze are delicious and I don't think generally they would have the ingredients you mention, except for the filo pastry and you mention sauces, not sure what kind of sauces you are not able to eat. They are often served as starters or side dishes, but they are so varied that they make a lovely lunch. Here is a link to some images of meze and other Turkish dishes

In most resorts there are many small family run hotels and apartment complexes, where they will cater for your individual requirements.
You should get some good advice on here, which should help you have a great holiday!

Hi Deborah. Hope you have a great holiday. I follow a lowish carb diet due to my diabetes, so very little bread etc. We almost always SC in Turkey and have no problems at all. I always make the most of the delicious fish and lots of salads. We eat out and in and do our shopping for fresh food in the markets. I eat special bread and take a few loaves with me and pop them in the freezer on arrival, however the heat kills my appetite there so that is a good thing. Watch out for the kofte (meatballs) as some use breadcrumbs to make them.

Hi Deborah,
In answer to your question, we do self-catering, or occasionally B & B, as there is so much to see & do and lots of excellent restaurants to visit, which we feel we would miss out on if we went all-inclusive, and also not sure how much of the food would be suitable in an A.I. hotel. (Also in my earlier post forgot to mention the lovely lamb dishes and fish).
As for where you decide to go, it depends on your own personal preferences. Resorts vary from the very large commercialised type, to the smaller more "Turkish" resorts, so my advice would be to choose carefully. We much prefer the smaller places. If you post on here what type of holiday you're looking for, I'm sure you will be given lots of recommendations.

We are looking for a beach resort..doesnt have to be very quiet and we dont mind if there are children around either. We would like to be able to hire a car of some kind or a jeep as we want to drive around and get to know the area. We are quite easy going really..we dont drink a lot though, so a party area wouldnt suit us...we are all in our late 40s early 50s.
