Hi Basil,

It's about 28 miles from Faro Airport to Albufeira and a taxi costs around 31 Euros (£21.50). I think this would make the cost per mile about 77p. So if you did do 800 miles in the week in taxis it would cost you over £616, instead of £180!

800 miles takes some doing, and you probably wouldn't go that far if you were using taxis so £616 is probably not what you'd end up spending. However, there's so much to see in the Algarve a car is a really good option and you can please yourself whether you go to lots of beaches, visit the resorts along the coast, go up into the mountains, go to water parks and so on, without having the hassle of planning ahead and booking taxis. Just get a map and a guide book and explore - have fun! :wink

Thanks Roseweb

Will definitely think about a hire car,

I'd go everywhere by local transport, but the better half wont do that.

We rented a car last year and travelled all over the Algarve and up into Monchique to the mountains and it was wonderful and the freedom it offered, come and go when we pleased.

Its a no brainer to be honest. Taxi 60 euros to and from airport.
Hire car 124 euros for a week. That means you are getting the hire car for just over 60 euros taking in to account transfer costs. OK so you have to put petrol in. But a full tank should do you for a week, hopefully.
BTW this is the company we use for hire cars.

As a change from driving , try the train. The line runs the whole length of the coast and the countryside is interesting. I don't think it is a substitute for the car but it does make a change if you don't want to drive every day. You will certainly need the car to get from Albufeira to its station, as it is a couple of miles inland. But Faro, Lagos , Tavira , Portimao and Vila Real de Santo Antonio stations are all just a short walk from the resort centres.
