There was a cost of living section on here the other day but i think it has all been updated. However if you type it in as a search you may find it. I go for the first time this Christmas but my general understanding is you won't need a lot.

Fiona the moderator may be able to help you find the link if you PM her.

Beer 60 rupees for about a pint. Soft drinks 20 rupees. Taxi from Arpora to Calangute is about 150 rupees. Cost of meals varies a lot depending on the style of restaurant. Cheap end is 200ish rupees each for two courses. Somewhere like Fiesta or After 7 (which are very nice) will set you back 700ish but it all depends what you have.

Eating out is very cheap and the quality is usually excellent. Look at the thread on this site for "Favourite Restaurants" for recommendations. Besides the two I've mentioned, I'd also recommend Mermaid in Candolim. Cheap but good are the Plantain Leaf and Tibetan Kitchen, both in Calangute.

Roma, is the "after 7" one step down from the "after 8"?

It was the After 8 but is now open from "After 7". All very logical really!

Is that REALLY true. they have changed the name because they are opening earlier?

HI Del

They have definitely changed their name from After 8 to After 7 and the earlier opening time was given as a reason. Perhaps it was a local's joke at the expense of gullible tourists but I seem to remember some new signage outside the restaurant that confirmed the earlier opening time as the reason!

Very confusing but the food is still brilliant!

sorry fiona,
not really off topic as i was trying to ascertain if the change of name may have resulted in a lowering of the prices as well the name i.e. from 8 rupees down to 7.
(what do you mean , you don't believe me )

edit- did I say it that loudly??

Hi Harry
I just got back from anjuna, 4 days ago. Depending on where and what you eat e.g being fresh frilled fish 300rs for a huge peice, or fish masala 120rs (and thats a fairly expensive place), food is generally very cheap in india. As is beer, indian branded cigarettes and all the tat you can buy, with some great stuff intermingled. I took £300 for two weeks and didnt spend it all, I also spent 4 nights in a cocohut in palolem for 200rs a night. My tip is to hide £50 and a credit card to those emergencys. Taxis are bigger expense, get a scooter if your brave enough. What ever you do have a good time

Hi the cost of a taxi from Arpora to Calangute/Candolim is approx 200 rupees Vicky is a nice lad & he & his father have 2 taxis Vicky's phone number is 00919822176769 There are many inexpensive places to eat around especially if you go to the Goan bars, beer starts at around 60 rupees for a large bottle up to 95 depending on where you go, spirits are 30 rups upwards for a 60ml measure. There are goan english & chinese restaurants around now, beach shacks do nice local dishes, inexpensive. A nice english bar/food near Kamat hotel phase 2 and Osbourne where you can get sheperds pie, fish & chips etc if you have had enough of curries!!!

Hi Harry,

As you come out of the Lagoa Azul and get to the main road road in Arpora, look to your left and you will see AllSpice restaurant. You will get fantastic food and drink for 2 for about a tenner, has to be tried!

p.s. as you are going to Lagoa Azul ( nice hotel by the way ) there is a windy and poorly lit road leading into Arpora from the hotel. Take a decent torch so you can see the speed bumps that are otherwise invisible.

Have fun
