Hello everyone,
I have found this website extremely helpful and can't wait to go to Bulgaria this Friday!!
My wife and I are going on honeymoon to Sunny Beach and staying at the Iberostar for two weeks.
It is our first trip to Bulgaria and we are a little apprehensive as to local customs and what is acceptable and what isn't. For example I have heard that the thumbs up can be construed as being a rude gesture?
Does anyone have any tips on how to make sure our holiday goes without us upsetting anyone
When eating at the hotel is it a custom to tip if the meal is included in the price? When eating out how much is the usual amount to tip?
When packing will I need to pack just shorts and t-shirts as I am hoping the weather will be warm enough!
Finally, does anyone know if there are any casinos in Sunny Beach which offer poker tournaments?
Really loking forward to it now and any advice much appreciated.
James
There is a Casino in Sunny Beach but i am not sure what tables are in there as I have never been in there might try it this year.
Bulgarian Weather is very changeable especially in September but you should be ok just take a warm cardigan for evenings it can get a bit chilly.
Hope you have a great holiday
MObily, never heard about the thumbs up thing, but I DO know that shaking your head = YES, and nodding = NO, so watch that one
Dont worry about the shaking and nodding head thing, most if not all of the Bulgarians working in the tourist areas nod for yes just like us, I believe its only the older Bulgars away in the villages who still use nodding for No,
As for tips, I usually give 10 Levs after a night in a pub/restuarant and they seem pretty chuffed with that, remember 10 Levs is only about £2.80 and most of these folk are only on a couple of Levs per hour.
P.S. I also bung them 20 Levs if the service is above normal, and I have had to do that a good few times as these people really are attentive and believe in service with a smile....It really is a pleasure to be waited on in a Bulgarian bar or restuarant.

We tend to round the bill up and then leave another 5 levs as well.
