We have stayed next door at it's sister hotel the Royal Cancun, we have walked round the Gran Caribe, with a view to taking our grandchildren in the future. It is an excellent hotel, right on the (newly restored) beach. The rooms look excellent and if the staff there are even half as good as at the Royal Cancun - you will want for nothing!
Plenty of kids activities, they have there own 'club house' with snacks (burgers/hotdogs) and playstations etc, etc.
Have you had a look at the website http://www.realresorts.com ? all the photos you will see are real and don't do the place justice.
You are quite close to all the action (10 mins walk) Coco Bongo's/Senor Frogs and near to a couple of large shopping malls. La Isla is huge and has a dolphinarium.
You will love it!!!!!

I forgot to say - if you haven't booked it already - just go for the cheapest room to fit you all in, from the Travel agent. It is LOADS cheaper to upgrade your room when you arrive. Seriously you can save £100's.

Captain Hooks boat trip is great - but book outside of the hotel, same trip but lots cheaper. Likewise Coba and Tulum are good if you like a bit of history. The zip lines/jungle tours are good if your kids are quite adventurous! Chichen Itza is a long drive away and an all day trip, kids might find it boring. Xaret and Xl-ha are good and easy to go on your own on a bus. Don't forget you can go Playa del Carmen and visit the Gran Porto hotel for eats and drinks - in fact you can trade nights there, but have to pay for a taxi AND check out of the Gran Caribe and then check back in when you arrive back - OK to do if you are just a couple, but probably wouldn't bother with kids.
