We're thinking of buying a desk fan to take on holiday, only a small one (6 or 9 inch) rather than paying the £30/£40 a week we've been charged in the past for aircon. Would we be ok taking this as hand luggage on to the plane?

No problem taking a fan, providing that it fits within a piece of hand luggage which complies with the maximum weights and dimensions permitted by the airline and both airports involved. Bear in mind that some airlines and airports allow just one piece of hand luggage, whilst others allow two.
