Hi everyone,
Last November while in Tenerife on holiday I was looking to buy a Digital Video camera, unfortunatley I was lied to concerning the reccomended retail cost of the and conned by a beach front store I have pursued the matter since and have been sent letters from the Direccion General de Consumo which despite my best atempts useing cross translation on line dictionaries failed to translate.
Can anyone help me by translating the letters into English please.
Thanks
Mike
Mike ... it may be worth taking a look at our ExPats & Owners Abroad forum, where some of the regulars are currently discussing the Spanish language .....
Many thanks for your help, I just want to try and make sure that these dissreputable thieves think twice before ripping off people who expect to be told the truth about manufactures reccomended retail prices.
My fault maybe for trusting these people but if I am told something in a shop [not a market] I expect to be told the truth I will keep you all informed of the action [if any] that is taken and name and shame the culprits when this is all over.
Thanks again
Mike
It's my understanding that manufacturer's cannot dictate the retail price of their products. Also, because of market conditions the "recommended" price may vary between countries.
The basic principle when buying anything is to consider if the price YOU are being asked to pay and determine if YOU think this is a reasonable price. If you feel you have been overcharged put it down to experience.
I believe that with the EU's agreement, Greece was able to charge higher price for some goods to tourists as opposed to locals. I'm not sure if this is still the case. I do believe the same principle applied in Spain for many years (possibly still does) and without official sanction. Such goods may well have a MRP indicated by the manufacturer based upon the local market conditions in which case tourists, being charged at a higher rate, might feel 'cheated'.

RECOMMENDED Retail Price. - That follows on from the abolition of Retail Price Maintenance.
Complaints have been made that the current practice is wrong. It has been said is in many cases the RRP is set artificially high, and consumers are confused as to what is the correct price.
Shops now as a matter of course advertise items as less x% discount. This makes it difficult for people to be sure that they are getting a fair deal.
As the product was bought in Tenerife was it declared at customs?
There is a value limit of I think £145 above which you are required to pay duty. For tax purposes the Canaries are not subject to the same rules as the rest of the EEC
I would assume that at the time you bought the product you felt you had a bargain. It is a fact of life that you can always find it cheaper elsewhere - the day after you have bought it.
