Can anyone suggest a Greek Island with its own airport for two Adults thats not too commercialised please? Some place with a little bit to do and worthy of a car hire for a few days but basically one which still retain some kind of Greek feel about the place?
Already done:
Kos
Rhodes(south)
Falaraki
Crete (twice)
Cyprus(twice)
Corfu
thanks.
I'd suggest Lesvos (although I haven't been for 20 years, I understand that it's not changed much!) - plenty of different scenery, very Greek and direct flights from th UK
This is the only island we have visited 3 times and it sounds like just what you're after. We dont understand why its not more popular because it has everything except wild nightlife. Its a big island and you definately need a car to make the most of it.
Any particular resort? A harbour perhaps or a really nice beach? We do prefare to eat out at different Tavernas so could you suggest somewere to stay?
Any more info would be appreciated.
PM if need be.
When I went, I stayed at Petra which was just beginning to develop (went back 3 times) - but I think that this is probably the most developed plcae on the island now after Kalloni. RDV will be better placed to advise but Molyvos/Mithimna whilst it hasn't got the best beach in the world is very atmospheric.
http://www.lesvos.com and its quite up to date. Driving is a pleasure here apart from Mytilene which is manic in the mornings and away from the towns the roads are very quiet. Dont miss a day in Mytilene though as its a great town.
We have Patmos on our list for a return trip along with numerous other unspoilt Greek destinations.
There are really only 5 locations on the island that are frequented by British tour operators and none are spoilt by tourism. Anaxos, Petra and Molyvos are all close to each other and Molyvos is certainly one of the most picturesque small towns we have seen.Skala Kalloni and Skala Erresos are the other 2 resorts featured by British operators. Molyvos apart, the other 4 have good beaches. Vatera in the south has a great beach and Plomari is a fascinating town with its beach just 3 kms to the east. Sigri in the west used to be featured by a couple of tour operators but I believe they have pulled out. Matt Barrett has a good site on Lesvos at We have Patmos on our list for a return trip along with numerous other unspoilt Greek destinations.
I too would recommend Petra (beach) on Lesvos or Agia Efimia (harbour) on Kefalonia .
