Hi,
Well I can honest say that this holiday I had from December 2009 - January 2010, was probably maybe one of the last ones I will have. Things are changing. I had the local supermarket owner telling me about the russians setting up brothels, and saying how he disliked them etc. Also in one of local bars, someone telling me that the abalone kept them awake all night with men coming and going.
OUr local taxi driver charged us 50 rupees more for our local run, telling us that all the prices had gone up, asked our goan friend and he said nothing had gone up! One of the restaurant boys who we have known for years was out in calangute town, asked us for 500 rupees, (I know whould not have lent it to him) said he would meet us the next day and give it back, and of cours ewe never say him again.
We know the prices of goods, foods and drinks etc, yet time and time again they really upped their prices when we went to buy anything, and we had to keep saying now be senisible and not give us these silly prices.
I could just go on, I was so looking forward to the holiday and it was our 13th time back to go, so you know what they say about 13. I have been so dissapointed. I don't want to go back again, but my husband has talked me round to going just one more time to see how we feel. And I must admit I would miss the people I have met there, goans, english, swedish etc, they are one of the reasons I kept going back. But the hotel this year was horrible, people partying and talking making loads of noise till 4 - 5 in the morning, and I know they are on holiday, but we just couldn't sleep. In the morning about 8.00 - 8.30am we would have indians from out of state in teh pool, shouting their head off, so after just a couple of hours sleep we would be up again, to sleep in the afternoon was a no no as well, as all the local children came into the hotel and played (I know kids do play, but do they have to keep on screaming all the time!) but after so many hours of no sleep, and this carried on for a month, it did not help in making this an enjoyable holiday. There is more, but i have bored you enough. Does anyont else feel like this.
So in april we are going again but just for two weeks (I have not booked yet still looking but my heart is not in it) I am going to see if we can get an apartment and see if that makes a difference. But finding one may not be so easy as well. Sorry to bore you all.
Besides the increase in a taxi price what were the other price rises you encountered ? You weren't too specific.
When we went in November we thought that other than a large Kingfisher beer nothing had gone up at all .
Hope you are looking to stay somewhere different in April ! For a good nights sleep I would recommend the Marinha Dourada .
I hope you have a better time in April, You should easily pick up an apartment in April and it may make a nice change from a hotel you didnt say which resort your going to but if your going to Candolim theres loads behind the football pitch and its really quiet there both during the day and night. Lets just hope it was unlucky 13 and No. 14 is much better.
If I stopped going its the people I would miss. Met so many brilliant people over the years and I love going back to see them again and I hate to think I wouldnt see any of them again.
Hi I agree with nejulie. Instead of staying in a hotel stay in a nice quiet guest house or apartment. There are lots of places between the football pitch and the sea. Turn right near the bottom of the Beach road between the car/ taxi park and Silver Sands and you will find lots of places along this road. A decent room will cost 1200-1500r a night. Pretty Petals and Coquieral are very good.
Many thanks to all of you that have responded, and I have been looking at the internet for places in calangute as that is where we want to be. The prices are really expensive - anyone know of anywhere where I can try?
Thanks
You still haven't told us where not to stay !!
we were staying int he braganza - and we have stayed there before (6 times!) but never again, this time was the last.
Less people the more they increase the prices...that's the way they think.
You sound really fed up spaldy, have you had enough of goa?
Totally Hudo,i've seen and heard enough.
oh dear, was it the Colonia de Braganza you stayed at?
I feel awful now, but as I said we have stayed there so many times before and although had a bit of noise this time it was bad. But it just may have been the time of year (boxing day till 24th January) so hopefully it may have gone quiet now. Please go with an open mind, the braganza is right in the heart of calangute and near everything, and the boys who tidy your room are the best. If you have any problems ask to speak to david who is the manager. But hopefully you will not have a problem, we generally stay by the second swimming pool, so if you stay by the bar and restaurant it may not be so bad. Please don't be put off by me.
Sorry!
