Ok, I'll try and be as comprehensive as possible. We went for two weeks , flying from Edinburgh to Dalaman, staying at Ali Ozalp Apartments in Dalyan.
Flight out was almost on time half an hour late and no complaints at all about Onur Air. Comfy seats, drinks to buy at reasonable prices and ok food. The fact that we had the same meal coming back is neither here nor there!!.
We were met at the airport after a very quick entry through passport and customs, mind you it was 2.30 in the morning. Only half an hour to Dalyan and we got shoved in a studio apartment for the night which was ok as we were knackered anyway. Next day we got transferred to the Duplex apartment we had booked.
Accomodation
We stayed in the Duplex aprtment, which was two bedroomed with two floors. downstairs living room and kitchen and toilet shower with two bedrooms and another toilet/shower upstairs. It had two balconies and an outside patio covered with grape vines so you could pick dessert!. It also came with AC and a safe deposit box for £31.50 a night. In reality we hardly ever used the downstairs area and could have easily used a one floored apartment. The Duplex could easliy have slept 7, there were only four of us. The apartment was clean but lacking a bit in kitchen equipment, some of the light fittings were dodgy and only having ac in one bedroom seemed a bit daft. They were cleaned twice when we were there.
There are at least two pools you can use and another three if you want to walk a bit, our kids found the two pools on our doorstep adaquate. There is one very small kids pool but all the others are at least 1.5 metres. There is never a rush to book loungers and the pool is never that busy but it can be a bit murky sometimes.
You can buy snacks and drinks at the pool bars, at a price slighty more than elsewhere, no own foods or drinks allowed at the bar or pool.
The staff at the complex are very, very helpful and friendly Niad especially and the owners Ali and Susan are also very good people and will do anything for you. Some people were happy to run up bar tabs and pay at the end, we tended to pay as went along. One they do well is tab all your drinks and then give you a bill at the end.
There is a small shop on site selling basics, like bread, milk and Efes but there are a few supermarkets within five minutes walking distance.
We found the supermarkets price wise to be about the same as here and if you look around you can buy the supermarket stuff there but save your fruit and veg and meat/fish/bread for the small shops nearbye, cheaper and better. The Saturday market in Dalyan has a fantastic area which serves the best fruit and veg, cheese, olives and oil.
Eating Out
We ate out more than we thought, it wasn'y anywhere as cheap as Croatia was last year. The food was mainly average with one awful meal. Again these are personal opinions.
Gardek- a new restauarant whic boasts Playstation and animals to keep the kids occupied, in reality it was one rude kid in a Man U top who hogged it all night and a few manky cats running around begging. The staff were way over the top, I've not had silver service with flambe done for about 15 years but it happened here. The food was truly awful and to be served frozen brussel sprouts!!. Trying too hard for the Brit market. 80 lira for two adult meals and one kids meal, two sweets and two beers.
Sini- Lovely surroundings, ok food and nice staff.90 lra but we did have a bottle of wine and the kebab in a claypot.
Golbasi- free mini bus trip out to the restaurant and certainly plenty for the kids, turtles, ducks, rabbits, a scabby dug and a very quiet restaurant. I had Grouper which was perfect, the best fish I had in Turkey. Kids shared a kids meal and had to have ice lollies for pudding as they had no puddings. Missus had chicken skewers and we had a bottle of supposidly great red at 32 lira, which was drinkable. 80 lira
Starfish- Nice staff, slight smell of drains as you sat outside but lovely food, the swordfish casserole was very good but I didn't really need a side serving of baked potato, chips and rice!. Few beers kids meals and tuna for the missus 80 lira.
Ramadan- Next to Starfish and opposite the Mosque. Ok food nice staff. I had the mixed kebab which was fine. 70 lira
Ali Babars- A real find, hidden behind the main drag. It has no menu and no prices. You go up to the chill cabinets and choose your meat or salads and they bring it out to you. Full of locals and tourists. The meats are the usual suspects but very well cooked and delicious. It's crowing glory is the range od mezze, dolma, beans, cheese pastries, salads are all tastetastic and soooo cheap. WE paid top price of 39 lira incluiding beers here for all of us.
Antik- Nice venue upstairs to look down on the passing people, kids liked their meal and the missus liked hers, sadly my Sea Bream had been cooked until it was chewy and unedible. 60 lira
My only gripe is this every restaurant now provides bread and garlic butter as freebies to tourists, whatever happened to some nice wee olives, bread and garlic dip?
Also had lunch in a couple of small places, just salads but they were divine and a nice cold beer was a nice way to wash it down.
Drink
We drank mostly Efes as it was such a nice drink on hot days, my kids pointed out that I actually had a beer for breakfast on two days!!. In the supermarkek about £1 for a 500ml bottle, in a bar about £2.
Raki- had this a few nights and nice but not to be mixed with beer!!!. again about £2 ish in the bars. About £7 for a small bottle in the shops.
Fresh Orange-mmm very nice and quite cheap
Cherry Juice-Our five year old loved this so much I had to go to the Turkish Shop nearbye to buy him some tonight!
Turkish Vodka. cheaper than imported stuff
Spirits in the shops were no cheaper than duty free and imported stuff was very expensive.
Trips
All of our trips were through Ozalp Tourism and all were ace
Talikasant Gorge- Long drive(2 hours) lovely walk up the Gorge, sadly dried up and after a nice lunch it was back on the bus and home, not really worth the long journey. Spoilt by the English guide who spent all his time chasing two Polish girls about half his age and then regailing us with his yarns about being in the SAS-LOL- cost 100 lirs for two adults. 2 kids
12 Island Boat Trip Gocek- Great trip five stops for jumping off the boat into the sea, nice lunch and lovely scenary-95 lira
Kocieck and Mudbaths
on Captain Ali's boat nice trip up river to the lake.Swimming in the Lake and then up to the market in Kocieck, sadly the market is no patch on Dalyan, some very aggressive sellers. Lovely lunch on the boat cooked by Susan. The mudbaths stink and Susan was saying"No good many people, dirty. It wasn't a pleasant experience. There is a cool box full of beer and soft drinks to help yourself to which we did. Cost 95 lira incliuding four soft drinks and four beers.
Barcadi and other beach trips- Same format, boat with Capt Ali and Susan, nice beaches, lovely BBQ, swimming and then back to Dalyan 85 Lirs including my breakfast beers!!
Crab Fishing- we hired Ali's small boat and basically charted a trip for the day. We went down to the river estuary and spent two hours crab fishing, the kids loved it, we caught 30 crabs, which the staff put on the BBQ for us that night. We then got our captain Niad to take us to the beach for a couple of hours and back up the river to home. We had four beers and two softies 100 lira.
Fethiye Aquapark
About 45 mins from Dalyan by Dolmus(60 lira for nuclear family) and 55 lira entrance. It's not huge. Five rides and two pools, which is fine for our kids, older ones may find it a bit boring but younger kids cannot get on most of the rides at Marmaris and Icemeler parks. It was never heaving and the staff were great food and drink reasonable. Dolmus dropped us off and took us right back to our accomodation.
Kaunos- Ancient Lycenium site, best visted early morning or late afternoon as it is really exposed. Fantastic site with lots to look at. WE got over the river via a wee rowing boat, rowed by a character called dada. Then a 15 -20 min walk up to the site. Site has a cafe on site and costs about 10 lira per person to get in.
Iztuzu Beach- voted third best in the world and rightly so. Miles of unspoilt sand and crystal clear water. Rerached by the meandering boats from Dalyan 10 lira for two adults, kids go free or by Dolmus . The Dolmus goes to a differant end of the beach. It has beach huts selling pannis and lovely pancakes and of course BEER.
Markets and Shops
Hmmm. Basically you pay for what you get. The guy on the Cheap Shite stall said this ok these t shirst are five for £10 but one wash and they will shrink. We bought some jeans and some polo shirts which were good value, some fake sunglasses which fell apart the next day. If you want to get any jeans altered while there go to the tailors in the market. I got a pair altered in ten mintutes, very well done as well, for 3 lira, here it would have cost me 20 lira at least. Be preparted to haggle and just walk away you'll get your price. Dalyan Market is pretty good. The youngster got three football strips for 30 lira. It is worth paying a bit more for the official fake strips that have a club badge, they won't fade and shrink in two washes.
Me I loved the fresh peaches and tomatoes, which actually tasted of peach and tomato, the superb cheese and olives and the banter!!
Overall- The people were without exception, helpful, friendly and eager to help. The location was superb, at night I could sup a cold beer and look at the floodlit Rock Tombs on the cliffs. Weather great, food sound and the beer, the beer was good.
I can say it all in one sentence
On our way back from Kaunos, we were hot and tired and thirsty, the road is deserted apart from a few farmsteads. A man came out from his house with a tray of little glasses filled with chilled apple tea for all of us, he then picked some fresh figs from his tree and gave them to us. All free of charge, we thanked him and walked on to where dada was waiting to row us back over the river.
That's me, I'll look in for a few weeks now and answer any questions anyone has. Cheers
Sandy Fenwick
Excellent 'tell it as you found it' report Sandy, enjoyed reading it, thanks
SANDY... good to read your report,i go to Dalyan a lot (next visit 10th Sept) thought that your room could have been cleaned a bit more than twice in 2 weeks though, know exactly who you mean about the English guide(good ol' DALE) a.k.a. WALTER MITTY but has a heart of gold...havn't tried that new restaurant you mentioned and dont think i'll give it a try either, good choice with Ali Babbas though..as you found out there's a lot to do in DALYAN to fill your stay and you seemed to have done it.Was it very busy with tourists ?as it's been a bit quiet last year and earlier this year ..good luck WAKI
I'm going to Dalyan in Sept and looking forward to it. I dont think I've read a bad report about the place yet apart from the mossie problem.
It will be a nice change only having a short trip from the airport instead of the normal 2 hour one.
Lynn
Any more questions Lyn just ask, either here or by personal message. There is another wee cafe by Ali Babars that does fish, they offer a whole fish with salad and a soft drink for 9 lira.
I can guarantee that if you go back again, everyone will recognise you. It's like a home from home almost, and I wish it was!
For me the walk to Kaunos is like the Turkey I remember from over 20 years ago, and the man with the tea and figs is what made me fall in love with Turkey in the first place. It is just so typical of their friendliness. Once, we walked on past Kaunos to the next village which was lovely.
Roll on October when we're going to Bitez, but we'll be back to Dalyan soon no doubt.
Shoe shine man is still there as is the disabled single rose seller on the hand rolled bike
I'd forgotten about the rose seller! Being a true Scot, hubby would never buy me a rose.
Loads of great info there - I am flying out on the 21st September. Never visited Turkey before although my friend has been to Dalyan. Will definitely look out for Ali Baba's and also make a note of some of your other tips
I really enjoyed reading your report!
Tell me, when you mentioned Taklisent Gorge - did you mean Saklikent Gorge? Or are they two different gorges?
If it's the Saklikent Gorge - I'm shocked to learn it's dried up! Proves how much damage has been caused by all this summer's hot weather!
Strawberry
Sakikent Gorge of course. The actual river still comes rushing down the bit at the bridge and you have to wade over it. The actual walk up the gorge though is dry.
