How to find an ATM (Cash machine) abroad.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are looking for an ATM machine in the resort you are travelling to I have found these 2 sites where you can search and check that there are ATMs before you go.
The first one is a search of all Visa ATMs and the second is a search of all Mastercard ATMs
http://visa.via.infonow.net/locator/global/jsp/SearchPage.jsp
http://www.mastercard.com/cobrand/maestro/atm/
A word of warning though. It is worthwhile checking with your bank before you go as to how much they will charge you for using ATMs abroad. Depending on the charges it is often better to withdraw a larger amount rather than lots of smaller amounts otherwise it can work out expensive.

Ask your bank before you go which banks in the country/ies you intend to visit have special links with them or offer reciprocal rates for cash withdrawal. This might give you an edge in deciding which of the many holes in the wall you'd like to put your card in!

Thanks to this site I have used a Nationwide creditcard very happily for the last two years abroad, taking money from cashpoints when needed.
I only use the card for holidays and pay it off immediately to avoid interest.
However, I have just had my statement through for my recent Cyprus trip and I have been charged interest at a rate of 1% per month for all the cash withdrawals.
I checked with them and there is no way of avoiding this new charge.
What a shame that Nationwide have chosen to join the crowd.

Bill and Helen
The Nationwide still do not charge for withdrawing cash overseas using the debit card on their Flexaccount.
Although they do charge 1% on cash advances using one of their credit cards, this is still less than any of the other major banks. Their charges range from 1.5% to 2.75%
I am travelling from Ireland to Santa Ponsa and have no access to VISA/MASTERCARD
Can I take a bank card with me a withdraw money from ATM's there?
Our banks are Permanent TSB and AIB!
Thanks in advance!!
cheers
According to the visa web site Icmeler doesn't have any ATM machines. Am I doing something wrong?
There's now a new way to find wher the ATM's are that's on your TomTom whetherit's Go or Navigator you can find where they are and if you use navigator (on a bluetooth PDA)it will take you to the nearest
for United Kingdom you can use links website.
anyone know if there is a atm machine in cala dor majorca, with american express logo
Check the American Express website as it lists all the ATM's that accept their card in a particular place.
does anybody know if you can use visa electron in salou, barcleona and this area
Hi mummyladybird
Are there charges on a nationwide cashcard for withdrawing money abroad?
Absolutely no charges, unless the ATM owner imposes one like they do at the casinos in Las Vegas, and a top rate of interest too.
There is definately no charge from cash machines displaying the Cirrus symbol. But as Luci says other ATM owners may.

Here's the proof that cash is CHEAPER from an ATM than exchanging at home before you go to Crete.
My wife exchanged some cash and bought 350 euros before going on 29th September. She shopped around for a good rate and got an exchange rate of 1.42 euros to the pound, so she paid £248.23 for her 350 euros.
I was busy at work and didn't get a chance to exchange money before going, so I took what euros I had left from the previous visit and used the cash machines. I went to the cash machine (ATE Bank) on the morning we arrived on 30th and took out 350 euros. On looking at my account (Yorkshire Bank) on my return, I got a far better interbank exchange rate of 1.471 euros to the pound, which more than covered the £8.32 charge that was levied for the exchange. I therefore was charged £246.37 including all charges for my 350 euros, saving £1.86. Cheaper than exchanging cash or taking travellers cheques and paying the commission charges.
As for the Amex Travellers Cheque card. BUYER BEWARE! This card incurs charges every time that you withdraw funds from it via an ATM or it appears otherwise. I found this out to my dismay in Crete earlier this year. Also, it is very frequent when trying to use Amex in a cash machine in Crete or other parts of Greece to get the message "Unable to complete transaction" or words to that effect and it simply spits the card back out. It seems that the Greek ATM network does not have good connectivity to Amex and it is very hit and miss if you can withdraw money from your card or not whilst there.
i have a nationwide card but its only a cash card with a cirrus logo on the back will i be able to use that in atms in magaluf
Cirrus no longer exists they were incorporated into Mastercard a year or so back, any Mastercard machine will do
It is also worth knowing that in some countries even ATM's that carry the logo of your card will only accept it if it is an international ATM,I have found this out as we are off to Brazil in a couple of weeks and have been advised that about only 1 in 5 ATM's will accept foreign cards.
The addresses shown may not be 100% correct but if you're check carefully you ought to be able to match them up on a map. But the Google maps provided by the link can be hopelessly wrong! Firstly the little markers on the map only appear when you've browsed the text details, so if there is more than one page of them you have to go through each page to get all the markers on the map. Except it's not worth it, because the cooridinates used are often wrong!
Whilst planning my recent trip to the German/Swiss border I asked it for machines on each side. The German markers looked a bit odd (a couple with low number addresses were half way down long streets when I would have expected them near to one end) but the Swiss ones were all over the place. One was in the wrong town completely and one was on a bridge over the Rhein. Having crossed that bridge several times before I was pretty certain the only things bolted to it were street lights and the border signs.
So I asked for those near my house just to check whether this was a blip. There are two listed for the railway station (correct!). One had it's full address shown as the bank branch responsible for it and the marker on the map showed it there, nearly a mile from where it actually is. The other had it's marker in the garden of a house outside of town and nowhere near where it should be - or anything else to do with a bank.
Save yourself a confusing walk, load Google maps seperately and search the address shown in the list.
Okay, how can I speed up people waiting in line at the cash machine? I mean its always the same you get stuck behind 5 people who appear to be using the bloody thing for the first time. Even after they have finally got their money and receipt and card back they still stand there looking at the bloody thing like its going to give them something else. Please tell me subtle ways to get the line moving faster.
This topic is about finding ATM's abroad and it is perhaps best if the possible solution on how to get people to speed up once at a ATM is discussed on a specialised "frustration at a ATM" forum elsewhere on the web.
