Hi Diane,
Unless you are hiring a car, I would suggest the bus is easily your best option. Buses from Benlmadena are failry regular and cost 79 cents each way. The journey takes about 50 minutes. Here is a link to the Portillo timetable. Scroll down until you come to the Mijas service.

You could also consider a taxi, if there are perhaps four of you. I took my wife up there last year for her birthday and, if I remember correctly, the fare was about 25 Euros each way. Not too bad when you consider you can pay that from the Airport to Benalmadena.
Mijas is a great place to spend a whole day and there are many nice places to eat and drink. If you are staying for the Evening, here is a guide to some of them, which includes descriptions, photos, and phone numbers for reservations. The one we use most often, (including the night of my wife's birthday), is Alcazaba. The view down to the coast is wonderful.

Thankyou JayJay thats most helpful.
You're welcome. Have a great holiday.
It depends where abouts you're staying in Benalmádena.
If you're near to the coastal road, then pop on a bus to Fuengirola and from the bus station you get the bus that runs regularly to Mijas.
If you're staying anywhere near Arroyo de la Miel train station, then pop on a train to Fuengirola and when you come out of the train station, cross the road and head for the beach, you will pass the bus station...I'm talking less than 5 min away (walking) between the train and bus station.
From there get the bus as above.
I find the train a lot better than any bus.

There is a regular bus service (see link) from Benalmadena to Mijas. You can also jump on the Torremolinos-Mijas bus (link 2) that passes through Benalmadena. Flat fare is 1.35e. If you are looking for another nice white village, get off the Mijas bus at Benalmadena Pueblo.

Another alternative depending where abouts you're staying in Benalmadena......
If you're nearer the train station, you can get the train from Arroyo/Benalmadena to Fuenigrola and then walk the few yards to the bus station, and catch the bus to Mijas.
From Fuengirola bus station it's about 15 mins.
