In Germany and France this happens all the time, because of the proliferation of 'last minute' holiday shops (hoteland flight and flight only) at the airport. So it certainly is possible over here.
I've never done it but wouldn't have a problem with it. We have said that one day we would pack our suitcases, head to town and see what bargains they had on that day or the day after, but haven't got round to it yet. One day we definately will though as you can get some real bargains!
When Ilived in turkey and came home for a holiday I would always phone up and get a flihgt for the next day when it was time to go back but then I only wanted 1 seat so I never had any problems.
A few years ago we booked tues lunchtime and flew weds morning! Just went to local travel agent and asked what they had for next couple of days and we got a bargain to Crete. I worried that it was too late to get any airport parking so they threw that in free! Its a risk but we got lucky and had a really good holiday.
Unfortunately with both hubby & I working in a school, we have no option but booking in advance. When we retire however, I'd have no problems in travelling the following day.
I work in school too so it was in main July/Aug holidays. My partner booked his time off and I went to travel agent day before his holiday started. They just asked if I had any preference where we wanted to go, I said our first choice was Greece but would consider anywhere at such short notice. Like I say, we were lucky and it is a risk.
I forgot that a couple of years ago we were due to fly to Mexico on the Monday & the Dr told hubby the flight was too long for him on the Friday!!!! He'd just been discharged from hospital after having pneumonia. We cancelled our trip & re booked for Cyprus - one of those allocated on arrival. Protaras was beautiful, but we weren't fussed about our accommodation. When I do a late booking next time I'll want to know where I'm staying.
Hi I work at a school also, so I am assuming there will not be much left in availability for half term. Will probably not know now until morning of the flight as things are changing with the ash daily.
I saw a couple in the travel agents at Liverpool airport with there suitcases so I assume people do it on a whim.
We did it 3 years ago, went to travel agent on Saturday and flew to Portugal the next morning Bit of a rush but had a great time and it was cheap.
We're hoping to do something similar at the end of the year.
We have done it before, went to travel agents in afternoon, was at the airport the next morning flying off, hotel wasnt tops but wouldnt expected too much for the price. My parents are semi retired and always just going off on a whim, i will often get texts saying went to travel agents off to here there everywhere tomorrow, i dont think i could do it now with three children. But it does certainly give you a a little buzz of the rush you have to get ready
