A fortnight in the Algarve for 2 adults & 2 teens, Self Catering but eating out for most meals over the fortnight? ( maybe not breakfast though, not sure about that yet !). we are not big drinkers, but could manage a bottle of wine between us at night. Hubby a beer at lunchtime & soft drinks for us.
I know this is a bit of an openended question, but would be grateful if people would share their recent experiences?
We will proably hire a car, but will put that on a Card, but need to budget for petrol and I have no idea how much it costs.
Will also no doubt do at least one boat trip & waterpark trip. Plus will need to pay for sunbeds and brollys at least 7 times I would imagine.
Sagres beer will cost in the region of €2.50 and sun loungers and parasols on the beach should be approx €5 pppd.
It's some years since I drove out there, but petrol is cheaper than in the U.K. ( but, there again, isn't everything.)
Dinner at night is not likely to cost more than €25 pp with wine.If you buy breakfast,a 'full English' will cost about €6( it's the beer that puts the cost up !! )A good bottle of wine will cost no more than about €4.50 in supermarkets ( try Monte Velho tinto if you like red.)A pint of It's some years since I drove out there, but petrol is cheaper than in the U.K. ( but, there again, isn't everything.)
Hi
We are two adults. eat out every night, bottle of wine with meal, a few drinks afterwards. Some lunches out, Usually snack on the balcony, get out of the sun. For a week £700
Sagres(a fountain of knowledgeon the Algarve and especially Lagos)is correct on the cost of a meal out and this will be a good restaurant
the two bars in the marina shops do cooked breakfasts on a morning if you do not want to cook
As regards a hire car the apartments have a secure section of a large car park which is accessed by your key card and it s never full
Another good site to look at for restaurant reccomendations is
http://www.simplylagos.com run by a canadian couple who own a couple of apartments in lagos

If anyone else has any views on this, I would be grateful to hear them? Particularly if you have travelled with youngish teens (12 & 14).
Sounds like petrol isn't that much cheaper than home, although I take your point Sagres.
Cheers, Doe
If you're happy with burger and fries a couple of nights, there's a little bar that we use regularly that does the best burgers I've ever had anywhere ( she even takes the trouble to toast the burger baps)The bar doesn't advertise the fact that they serve snacks,so, if you want directions, just shout.
Sounds like that could be one for us on a couple of evening Sagres. It might sort out my 'balance of payments deficit' so I can go 'posh' on a few other nights.
Will p.m. directions to you.
Also. elsewhere, a quite acceptable eat all you like Chinese buffet for €8.50 drinks not included.
We are quite independant and dont mind eating off the beaten track if we are out for the day. When we were last in this area about 8 years ago we drove inland and westwards for some miles and ate in what appeared to someones front garden. He only had two tables and took me in his kitchen to choose from basically chicken or fish. We had lovely chicken cooked with potatoes.
I'm just trying to get a feel for how much prices have gone up since the Euro really.

We spent a week in Lagos in January. Ate out at a different restaurant every evening. Normally just had the couvert and a main meal each plus a bottle of wine. Usual price was around 36 euros but did have 2 meals where the bill was only about 26 euros. Think the most we paid was 45 euros and this was for 3 courses wine plus liquor coffees. Some of the restaurants were more like little cafes but never had a bad meal
Although i have been before, could you explain to me about the couvert?
Is this when they bring you the little dish of olives and some dipping bread?
I know it's an odd question, but if there are 4 of us will they charge us for it the four times, as I am the only one who likes this type of thing?
Yes the couvert are small appetiser type dishes like sardine paste, marinated carrots bread and cheese. I'm not sure but i think they normally bring enough for the number in your party. Don't know if they charge per person as we just tucked in. I'm sure the more regular visitors to the Algarve will be able to help with this.
The couvert is normally charged per person. In theory if it's not touched you won't be charged but it's advisable to check your bill.In your circumstances you'd be best to make it clear to your waiter/waitress that couvert for only one person is required as soon as they come to your table. In some restaurants the couvert can be a course in itself,in others just bread, olives and pate with cheese.
Last year at the Museu de Salgados the couvert was 2 euros I think but for 2 of us consisted of 5 different types warm rolls, 4 different types of salami/cooked meats(about 12 slices), olives, butter, sardine paste, cheese, cheese paste and marinaded carrots so it was very much worth it. We used as a starter every time we visited.
Depends where you go though as I have seen a few scabby bits of bread with butter for more than this price. If you dont want it just tell them I suppose and then keep an eye on your bill!
Lummie
Definitely watch the bill (as I found out ) Ours was only for €3 for bread, olives ( ) and sardine pate.
Thanks for your comments. I would be quite miffed if I found that over the course of 14 days I had paid 140 Euros for couvert, as I would probably be the only one to have nibbled the odd olive. Money could possibly be better spent on refreshments of the liquid variety.
