If you look on google earth you can see the "artificial reef" just off the beach.
They have planted a row of large "strawberry" planters just off the beach, which attract the fish. If you are a better swimmer you can go the other side where there are larger fish about, definitely Barracuda, not sure what else.
Depth is probably about 5 ft so you can stand and watch the fish if you don't like snorkelling!
On the beach side of the reef, there are shoals of what I think are called garfish that dive in and out of the people, gave the wife a bit of a shock to see this thing hurtling at her through the water and turning away at the last second.
There are also rocks by the beach bar (lighthouse), where one of the "fishing party" caught an octopus.
To see the camouflage changes first hand was amazing.
The normal procedure was to catch the fish and put them in a bucket. Later the locals would come and claim them for tea, but we decided to accidentally tip the bucket far enough for the octopus to escape. It hit the rocks and disappeared! We watched it sneak off but if we hadn't known it was there we would have stepped on it.
The beach is a fairly safe snorkelling environment.
At the hotel is a dive centre, which runs proper snorkelling trips where you can go to better areas. We booked our snorkelling trip to Catalina island not with them but with the trip hut and it was run by a Diver's shop in the village. We felt we were just along to make up numbers and the divers were the main people catered for so we were dumped on a beach and left while they went off to a deep reef. The snorkelling was good but as far from the beach as you could get, which was not much use to the weaker swimmers. We saw rays, sea snakes etc.
On the Saona Island trip there is a chance to snorkel in Bayahibe bay where the fish are impressive.
Unfortunately for me, I have since been to the Conrad in Sharm, so snorkelling elsewhere is now a bit of a let down!
Thank you for your reply, yes egypt agree with you & the maldives we are going back to both this year. Back to nuweiba tomorrow & maldives in december
I have been reading all your wonderful and informative reviews regarding the Hacienda Dominicus and it is all invaluable. My partner & I have seen this hotel in numerous brochures and are looking into holding our wedding there, Apr 2010. We can't yet book as the prices for 2010 are not yet available but I was wondering if anyone else has married here or attended a wedding and would shed some light on it, was it amazing, were you/they treated well, who did you book through, were the arrangments made easy etc etc - being the bride I have a hundred and one questions to ask but will limit myself on my first post
We have been looking at the First Choice package for the wedding. Up to now there are 20 guests wanting to join us so the party will be fairly large.
If anyone could give me (us) any information or reviews on this I would be hugly grateful.
Thank you!
Welcome to the forum!
Few mentions of men having to wear full length trousers in the speciality resteraunts but do you have to wear collared shirt with those trousers or is t-shirt acceptable.
I think the code is just to do with the length of the men's trousers and sleeves.
You could get away with shorts if they were below the knee, or 3/4 length trousers.
T shirts had to have suitable sleeves.
They don't seem to moan about the ladies.
After a lot of research (& I mean a lot) we've decided to go to the Hacienda Dominicus in May
We have a daughter who will be 17 months old (& is tiny) so won't be able to sit at the table, I've emailed the hotel & they've told me that they don't have high chairs. Has anyone else been here with a toddler/baby and if so what did you do regarding mealtimes?
Thanks
Stacey
