How suitable is Gran Canaria for a holiday maker who is in a wheelchair? I have been told that Puerto Rico is not good for people who have mobility problems, but are the Playa Del Ingles, Maspalomas and San Agustin any better? Is there access to the beaches in these areas? Any other information would be a great help.
Thanks
Amy
Hi, would think Maspalomas/Melonares would be the better choice, never stayed in Puerto Rico only been there on day trip and was not impressed, but there a loads of people who love it there. Play de Ingles is more of a younger generation place although there are some very nice hotels there. We always stay in Maspalomas (and have done for the last 10 years) which is fairly flat and within easy distance to PDI if you want to go there. What type of accomodation are you looking at? Hotel or self catering? Anything you want to know just ask.
We would be staying in hotel accommodation. How far is Maspalomas from PDI? What is the area of Maspalomas like? Is there a good choice of places to go at night?
http://www.travelrepublic.co.uk and thomson they do most of these hotels, and do not hesitate to ask for any more info.
There are some fab hotels on the Melonares beach but they can be very expensive, eg. Lopesan Villa de Conde, Seaside Palm Oasis, Rui Grand Palace. In Maspalomas you have a really nice hotel The Maspalomas Princess/Tabathia. These hotels are a 5 min taxi ride to PDI, but are all flat level so easy to push a wheel chair, The Gran Canaria Princess in PDI is very nice also. PDI is flat but I think access to the beach would be difficult, but can't be absolute positive on that. Take a look at Now whilst Puerto Rico isnt ideal, it can be workable. somewhere like the Marina Suites is new and up to date for facilities, it lies on the flat by the marina. A short distance to the easy access of PR beach and just down hill (not to steep or long) from a commercial centre.
PR also has a number of specialised taxis available.
Maspalomas/meloneras is nice, is flatter but, as stated by tinky some of the hotels are a bit pricey. And many are little dated and thus dont have the access of facilities you may need.
It may depend on your budget and whether or not you want hotel, AI or self catering etc.
And whilst GC may not be the most ideal location is well worth the effort to come over.
If you need anything feel free to post or PM.
We stayed at the Cordial Playa in P Mogan.
That was ideal for a wheelchair user, there where about 3 people there in wheel chairs.
This is a new Hotel 3 years old so as been built with wheelchairs / pushchairs in mind.
The Hotel is really lovely.
We will go again.
