I think DIY works better with apartments rather than hotels, due to the fact you do not pay a surcharge for not having full occupation. Also the choice is better than with travel agents, you have a wider range to pick from rather than a selected few. There is a bit more flexibilty with DIY as well as you are not stuck to the dates with the travel agents. this is more noticable with the west med resorts where low cost carriers fly there daily. I find you can usually get a slightly better hotel for your money through DIY but if you know the hotel you want then sometimes it can wotk out dearer depending on how available or exclusive the hotel is.
with flights bought on line comes to £800 each.
Last week I booked the identical holiday with thomas cook, booking on line came to £685 each.
who says DIY is cheaper
I'll rephrase that then.
Hi wayne zab - I think that most people will agree that is is NOT always cheaper to DIY. You really need to check and compare all options and go for the best available price. I appreciate that all this takes time, but it can prove a very viable option, as many members have discovered for themselves Jenny
Nobody as ever said DIY is always cheaper, but if you can get me a fully equpped 2 bed/2 bath apartment for 11 nights for £1100 (includes accomadation/Private Transfers and insurance) for a party of 2 adults and i child (12), August 17th to 28th through a travel agent i will agree with you.If you want specific accomadation it will probably be dearer DIY, DIY is about flexibility. I for example this time needed a 11 night stay due to holiday limitations. Most travel agents will only give me 7 or 14, Thats where DIY comes good

My DIY was much cheaper, flights with thomsonfly £114.44 & accomodation £585 for 2 weeks with winter sunshine. My travel wanted £1341 when I last checked - only have to pay for tranfers!! This is beginning september though!! All this for 2 of us £699.44 can't be bad.
Hi all, we go to Malta 4 or 5 times a year, in winter ie, February, March and November it is much cheaper to get a package with Malta Direct or Chevron however in summer ie June and September DIY works out much cheaper if we sort our own flights and accomodation, so if anyone has any questions regarding DIY Malta and Gozo let me know.
Where did you find an apartment at that price for 2 weeks? The cheapest i found is £716.Havung said that i am going on 6 August, and prices dont tend to drop until end of August.
Regards
Pat
I have booked my first DIY for next August last week, i have booked a villa with pool in the Algarve £1450 (it s nice) flights £853 this is for 4 people a car hire is included in this too. The flights are no frill flights with Travel Republic and the flight times are really good, if i wanted to i could have booked the package with the company i booked the villa with Villaplus.com but their prices for villa, car and flights was £400 more so i have had a saving, even though i have since seen the flights £50 cheaper on thomsonfly
I've booked many DIY's, only ever booked 1 package holiday this year, that was cos the price was too good, no amount of DIY'ing could beat the cost and price of the package last month. It's mainly about the flight prices, sometimes they are just too expensive to make DIY'ing worthwhile.
This time I've booked to go to Majorca in Aug 07 for 2 weeks.
Flights £141.71 with thomson 22.08-04.09.07
Hotel £453.61 A/I with 0800hotels.co.uk (btw cheaper to book over phone)
Car Rental £163.00 (2wks clio a/c)
Insurance £36.11 annual multi-trip brought last month, so that's half the cost of it
So who can tell me I'd get all this for 2 people cheaper with a travel agent? in the peak of summer too..
It usually is cheaper if there are more than 2 as you pay for the room and not per person. I find Thomson Hotels only often cheaper than a lot of the other agents. This is what I have just booked: 2 weeks in July/August summer holidays going to Salou for 2 adults +1 child (although classed as adult in normal bookings). Flights Ryanair = £353 + Thomsons Hotels H/B = £925 (Ranked as 5th out of 100 hotels)+ £40 tranfers Total £1318. I priced this same holiday as a package and the cheapest I could find it for was £1854 with some being over £2000. So with over £500 savings thats most of my spending money. Karen

The cheapest alternative I could find was £1800 for seven nights booked through Direct holidays. I was going to get a cancellation thinking that I could not afford to book ahead but glad I did it DIY as cancellations are a risky thing when travelling with young children.
The apartments we usually stay in charge £200 a week for a 2 bedroomed apartment with ensuite shower room. We fancy staying somewhere else next time but that would have made a total cost of £776 for 4 of us in August. It can be done cheaper as I've seen 1 bed apartments on accommodation sites for less than £200 for the two weeks.
Bargains are out there!
