Isles of Scilly

It's over ten years since we went so can't say the information is current but as there is very little development allowed on the islands I don't suppose things have changed.

There's lots of self catering cottages that book up amazingly early because people just keep going back. Have a alook at http://www.scillyonline.co.uk. for all types of accommodation.

Tresco and St Martins will be very expensive. I have to say that I didn't find anywhere was cheap - it's a supply and demand thing. Too many people chasing too few beds. St Marys is the main island with the most accommodation, by far.

Frankly there's not a great deal by way of organised entertainment - the boat club used to have things going on but it's a pretty chilled out, laid back type of holiday.

It's a fantastic place and I keep meaning to go back but there's so much to do and so little time...! We met people who go back every year - it's that kind of place. If you get the bug you just have to go back and I can understand how it happens. Great beaches and climate and just a very relaxed and easy feel to the place.

Hope you'll enjoy.

We`re going down to Cornwall in July, and for a special treat this time, we`re taking a trip over to the Isles of Scilly by helicopter, as we`ve never been in one, planes and gliders yes, helicopters no. What I`d like to know is do we have to book in advance, or can we just turn up? The problem with booking in advance is that I don`t fancy flying if the weather turns bad on the day.

Numberplease,

I have been to Tresco in the Isles Of Scilley every July for the past 4 years and have always taken the direct helicoper service from penzance.

I have always booked well in advance and i would advise doing this. July is peak season so you will be taking your chances if you just turn up, as there aren't that many seats on board.

Also i expect the last-minute fair would be more expensive!

Hope this helps a little, feel free to ask more. You will love the Isles of Scilley-very beautiful and peaceful. And when the sun shines you can liken them to a Caribbean Island!

Regards,

Thank you, Limelolly, will bear your comments in mind. Do we get plenty of time to look around properly when we get there? Years ago, when the children were small, we were going to go there for a holiday, but self-catering accommodation was an outrageous price, even then.

We are off there next year. Quality cottage for the week 900 (4 people summer school holidays) and flights by helicopter 400. Boat would save 200. Camping would save 650. So, it can be done cheaper, if you don't mind sleeping under the stars.

We are happy with the accommodation but you can get it a bit cheaper if you go 3 star. Its finding somewhere though. Most places are booked so far in advance, you have to try and get a booking a year in advance from someone who has decided to not return.
