I once got stung by a jelly fish in Majorca and it stung like hell! What I like (usually) about the costa del sol, is the fact that the sea is usually pretty much a jelly fish free zone, compared to other resorts, yet this year when I went 3 weeks ago, I overheard a couple of people talking about people who had been stung this year.
If you decide to go for a paddle, maybe it'll be safer to put on a pair of wellies, just in case!

I was in the sea yesterday and didn't see any or washed up on the beach. Sometimes its only a shoal and they are gone the next day.

I was in Fuengirola last week, only went in the sea once though. I didn't see any jellyfish and also there were quite a few people in the sea so it didn't seem to bother them.

I was stung by a small jellyfish last year. I saw what I thought was a clear plastic bag floating by me but felt a stinging on my arm and saw I had a burninging red mark about the size of my fist on my forearm. I went and lay down, thinking that I was going to be really ill or pass out or something as it was burning quite a lot but it gradually eased off over the next few hours and had gone by the next day.

Apparently it's usual for restaurants to have to supply some vinegar to put on the sting but human urine is another remedy. Another Spanish recommendation is to rub wet sand onto it. Perhaps you could take along a bottle of vinegar just in case someone is stung.

A couple of years ago, in Fuengirola again, there was a HUGE jellyfish washed up on the beach. I would describe it as looking like someone had emptied half a bucket of wallpaper paste onto the sand as it was about the same colour and was the size of a large dinner plate. I'm certainly glad I wasn't stung by one that size!

Hi Spindles, thanks for all your reply's.

I actually think I remember seeing that jelly fish, was it up Los Boliches end, opposite "Cheers" pub/restaurant ???? We always use "Paco's" Sunbeds opposite the Rhonda 4.
I remember everyone was coming to have a look at it.
I love swiming in the sea, but frightened of what passes you by.
I have always thought the sea there, was very clean indeed.
Five weeks today, I shall be on that beach sunning myself !!!! Yipee !!!

You quite often see them washed up in Los Boliches beach, funny looking things when they're washed up aswell!
On the subject of urine or vinegar, maybe it's best having vinegar handy, because if the restaurant wont supply you with any, you may get a strange look if you ask the waiter to pee on your arm! :D

Hollands Toffee - , the jellyfish I saw was on the bit of beach opposite the Gardenia Park, right at the far end of Fuengirola beach. Hope you enjoy your holiday in five weeks and also that you like it HOT as the temperatures were around 39 - 44.

Quakermass - you conjured up a very funny picture with your mention of the waiter peeing on your arm. Maybe it would be better to just take an empty bottle into the bathroom every morning, at least it would ensure the remedy was fresh!.

The sea has now gone a lot cooler so the chances are the jellyfish have now gone for good or until the middle of September when it warms up again.

I'm off to Fuengirola next month.......and I hate jellyfish!! Anyway....I';ve armed myself with this safesea from ifsogo.com as I much prefer the sea to swimming pools. Are we talking just the odd few or am I likely to be surrounded by them ??? :(

Spent a bit of time in the costa Del sol this year and have never really seen any but they arrived last Thursday. We were on La Cala beach in Mijas and nobody was swimming which seems weird. Had a walk down with my son and they were everywhere. I did here they would most probably disappear but we left on Saturday without knowing!!

this is going to sound gross....but if you are unlucky e'nuf to get stung,,,, the best and quickest way to counteract any 'sting'..is to pee on the affected part of the body, as soon as poss... honest...!! :yikes :omg alternativly..go to the nearest crusa roja (spelling??) red cross station most of them are near the beaches.

This may be old news reappearing !
Just managed to hear on the radio that there are millions of jelly fish in the sea around the costas but didn't really say what sort or where ( apart from 'the costas' of course )
Off the nerja this weekend with kids so any info appreciated

Millions wow !!!!!!!

There are always Jellyfish in the sea but this year they are coming into shore early as the water is so warm, I've not seen any myself this week.

The Nerja beaches are flagged beaches if the red (danger) flag is on show and the sea is calm then it's a safe bet that there are Jellyfish.

I'm off to Nerja tomorrow so I'll let you know if I see any.

Hi All,

Just got back from 'Bela', we were there 2 weeks.
First week no problems with Jelly fish, but last Tuesday 16th Aug, there was 'Millions' like the first post said.

Red flags were flying as far as we could see and no-one was in the water.
Kids were netting them out by the 'Bin' load.

The next 2 days they were still been washed up, then they werent as bad.

I got stung twice.

I have mentioned this before, but seriously try the safesea lotion from ifsogo.com.......it protects against the stings somehow. I use it because I got stung by sealice (invisible litle organsisms apparently thatpack a painful sting), but it's mainly for jellyfish and fire coral. And if all else fails.....pee on the sting (like to you try but it is upposed to work!)

Did you know that "millions of jellyfish" are collectively known as a "SMUCK" - just something to lock away for the next pub quiz

Its getting better as far as I know. It is a bit cooler and they only seemed to be around at the hottest part of the day. If you get a sting though, bathe it with sea water, not freshwater until you can get some vinegar on it. Try to take out the little stingers if there are any stuck in you and go to the red-cross sheds.

My daughter got jellyfish sting on Costa Del Sol 2 weeks ago. Local barman put white vinegar and then an antiseptic anesthetic cream on it and she was fine. You must use 5% white vinegar not the brown stuff.

I've been stung by a jellyfish - thankfully it was only a little one. It looked like a clear plastic bag floating by and it was only when I felt a stinging, like you get when you accidentally rub against a stinging nettle, that I knew I'd been stung. I didn't have anything to put on it and just lay on the beach, hoping that my arm wasn't going to drop off! It took several hours for the rash to disappear and the stinging to go so it would certainly have helped to have had some vinegar put on it. It's an old wife's tale that urinating on a sting will take the pain away. Studies have shown that it doesn't work and could make it worse by making the embedded tentacles release more stings. It also depends on which type of jellyfish stings you as to what you do. I don't know what sort of jellyfish are around at the moment. I was in Fuengirola about three years ago and one had been washed up on the beach - it was HUGE! It was about the size of a large dinner plate and looked like someone had tipped half a bucket of wallpaper paste in a heap. It was horrible and I wouldn't have wanted to have been stung by THAT one!
