if i was to hire a car where aree the best places to see..with 10 and 12 year olds?

So many places.Seven Springs, there's a tunnel to wade through which brings you out to a little lake.If you have a meal there you are likely to have a peacock begging for crumbs at the table.
Prassonissi, where the Med. and the Aegean seas meet. Calm sea one side and a surfer's paradise on the other.
Petaloudes--Valley of the butterflies. The butterflies are actually moths and are only there around August but the walk up to the monastery through the valley is lovely. Watch out for tiny freshwater crabs.
Lindos, always hotter by a few degrees than Trianda.The Lindos taxis are donkeys but better to walk up to the Acropolis yourself and give the donkeys a rest!
Agathi beach. A sandy beach which is so safe. You can walk out for ages before being out of your depth.
Rhodes Old Town. After walking down the tourist trap that is Socrates St. turn into the tiny side streets, it's like a maze and so peaceful.The Palace of the Grand Master is in the Old Town and also worth a look.
Filerimos. You can walk along the "Via Dolorosa" to the huge cross. If you climb up into the cross the views are spectacular.
I could go on and on!!! Have a lovely time on a lovely island.

Re: Filermos - omg, that cross! My knees still wobble when I think about the height. Like Anne says, def. worth a look. If you are into planes you can watch them take off from below. freaky.

Yes, Ninkynonk, that cross indeed. I had jelly legs for hours after coming down!! Worth it though, but I stay at the bottom now and wave to friends who have gone up!
