Hi all,
My partner and I have booked 2 weeks in Kalkan this September but we have just found out that he is needs a hip replacement early summer. My partner is in his 30s so this has come as a shock! The operation is planned for July giving him about 6-8 weeks to recover before our holiday.
Many people have commented in Kalkan threads that it is a very hilly town so I'm a bit worried that he won't be able to get around much. Is it really that unaccessible for the infirm?
We dont plan to hire a car so would be using taxis or the dolmus for trips.
The apartment we have booked is a 10-15 minute walk downhill. Taxi's will defo be required coming back uphill!
The doctor has said that within 6-8 weeks he will be back to normal health but may need a crutch for additional support if he feels he needs it.
We went to Lanzarote last year and he had a broken foot (I know!) and even though the roads were fairly steep, that didnt turn out to be a major problem. So I dont know if I am worrying about nothing.
Any thoughts Kalkan lovers?
Kalkan is built on the side of a mountain and as many people have said before, if you have walking difficulties then it is not the place for you. There is one road known as cardiac hill and believe me, it is steep. What you intend doing is the best way to go, walk down and taxi back. Hopefully your partner will have reasonable mobility by the time you go. Go to topic Just Booked Kalkan whereby you will find a link to the Discussion on Kalkan topic. Also look at website Enjoy Kalkan.
Kalkan is very hilly but that would not be too much of a problem normally for you as you can always get a taxi. I think the biggest problem is your partner actually getting on the plane and sitting for over 4 hours.
My sister in law has recently had a full hip replacement,,,not sure if there is a smaller operation which your partner is having but in her case she can still not move that well after 6 weeks, This week they tried to get her into the car and walk up the stairs without the crutch but she said it was agony. She is a fighter and has pushed herself to walk up and down her road every day and also to do the excercises given by the hospital.
I am just worried that 8 weeks will be too quick to attempt Kalkan. Best to see what the consultant says, Everyone is different on recovery.
Best of luck, if you cannot get to Kalkan this year there is always next and you will love it.
As we have already booked and paid for the holiday, my partner wants to keep things as they are.
His consultant is trying to move the operation to an earlier date so fingers crossed this will give him more time to recover.
And as you said Barb H, there is always next year! It will be the second year we have had to cancel Kalkan but Im sure we'll see it one year!
Thanks again!
have you advised your travel insurer? You need to let them know of any change in the health of anyone travelling which includes any surgery. If you declared your husband's condition when you took out the insurance you should be covered if you need to cancel provided they accepted it.
Thanks for the reminder! It was on my to-do list but will get on it asap!
