Hi All,
Have any of you Greekophiles been to Kavala in north eastern Greece?
I have a Greek friend who lives in Nuremburg, Germany and they have an apartment in Kavala. They siad I can have it for free (for 2 weeks only) when ever I want, so just looking for someone who has been there who can give me a little info on the place.
My Greek friend would, but they cant speak English and I dont speak Greek, and my German is not so good.
Who cares? Get in there! Seriously though, I'm sure it will be great, and you will have so much to see.
Kavala is a nice place, walk uphill to the old part, see the aqueduct spanning the traffic in the middle of the city, some photos here,

The city has lots of history, Ottoman, Byzantine etc, I thoroughly recommend doing some research & reading before you go to make the most of it.
Go to the lesser known, but large, site of Phillipi,

Also not too far are the Alistrati Caves, also well worth a visit,

A trip across to Thassos is easy enough too. I think if you take up this offer you may well want to go again, if you don't can I go instead please?
It's supposed to have a huge and exciting market, but when we went, on a day trip from Thassos, we were so tired and hot we just wanted coffee! But if you need veg it's wonderful.
Ahensfan - Great pics, thanks!
I am going to take the offer up. But cant go until late August/early Sept as my girlfriend (girlfriend, blimey I'm 54 do you have girlfriends at that age!!) has just started a new job, and here in Germany you have to do 5/6 months 'probation' before you can take any holiday.
Been to lots of the islands, but rarely to the mainland, so should be good.
Anyway, thank you again. I'll add a report when I get back.
