I haven't been to Paxos (yet) but had a 2 week split centre holiday in Kefalos and Kalymos a couple of years back. This was my review at the time - about half way down the page.

Hello there, I would definately say that the place to go is Kefalos. My partner and I were there two September's ago and it sounds as if it's as you describe how you want your holiday. We found that kefalos was full of couples, we hardly saw any children, definately not an 18-30 place. Kefalos is a fishing village and along the water front you'll find bars and restaurants, not hundreds but quite a few. It also has a good few shops and I would definately recommend the jewellery shop called Traditional we spent a fortune there. Obviously, there are supermarkets as well, away from the front along the main road there are also bars, restaurants, shops and supermarkets. You must visit the old part of Kefalos which you could either catch the bus to or walk a good steep walk which takes around 30-40 minutes, depending on the heat, here it's very traditional with cafes and the views from the top across the bay are wonderful. Being in Kefalos you're only about a 30 minute bus journey to Kos town itself, we only went there once as we found it to be too touristy and much prefered the quieter and laid back of Kefalos. The beach is sandy/fine shingle and has some beach/snack bars along it, in my opinion this was the best holiday we had on one of the Greek islands.

Of the three islands I've only been to Paxos, but I've been there 13 times, so you can guess it's my top choice! I've written a miniguide to it here

I expect that Elenitsa will be along shortly to tell you about Kalymnos - she went there last year. She's also been to Paxos and I wouldn't be surprised if she's also been to Kefalos - she's done most of the Greek islands!

Basically none of those are non-touristy destinations, so there will be plenty of bars. You don't have to decide between Kamari beach(aka Kefalos) on Kos and Kalymnos, they can easily be done even in a week using the Mastichari-Kalymnos ferry. Kamari beach used to be non-touristy about 20 years ago but it has developed a lot since then.

Kalymnos town (Pothia) itself is not touristy, a large noisy greek island town, the main tourist resort area is around the Myrties/Massouri area, basically because of the beaches and accomodation possibilities.

Paxos is very different, mainly a yachty/villa tourist place, for a decent choice of bars you would need to stay in Gaios the main port. The main thing people don't like is the lack of sand on Paxos, but if white pebble coves are your thing there is a vast choice.

Hmmm - NOT been to Kos have flown there twice (and again in October!) but staying there just doesn't appeal. I think the main consideration factor here could be cost and individual preference.

I liked Paxos VERY much but it is expensive, I would say about 25% more expensive than Kalymnos for eating out and probably at least 100% more expensive for accommodation. That said - it is a beautiful island, if suffering a little bit from the British ex-pat influence, especially around Lakka. I would certainly go back again - but to either Loggos for peace and quiet or Gaios for the buzz and Greekness.

Kalymnos - a bit of a weird one - liked it very much, but you have to pick your spot. We stayed in Armeos, just outside of Massouri and I found the original tourist strip of Myrties and Massouri vaguely depressing, as the tourist industry has reduced by a huge amount. Telendos and Emborios were great little spots, by no means unspoilt but reminded me of Greece 10 years ago (We're going back to Emborios for a few days in October). Cost wise - accommodation is very cheap, outside of the climbing festival - we paid 20 euros per night for a 6 day stay in a studio with a clear view of Telendos (1st week in June) - had we been staying over the week it would have been 15 euros. Food - about the Greek average - 25 -35 euros for 2, depending on the meal and alcohol!

Send me a message if I haven't covered everything!

I would recommend Kefalos. lots of bars, but not too touristy. Some lovely beaches just on the outskirts, loads of really good tavernas, you could be spoilt for choice. We have also visited Kalymnos, once for two weeks and twice for the day from Kos. Prefer Kefalos personally. We are going again for our twelvth visit in September.
