According to Google directions Kensington is between 7 and 10 mins by taxi from Paddington station.
Thank you - its around what I thought then. The tube is probably roughly the same time.

yes thinking of booking a Top Secret Hotel, hence my other post.
the hotel I picked didn't have any rooms left & the only other one in my price range was in Greenwich & I haven't the foggiest where that is in relation to attractions.
Grenwich is about 8 miles from Kensington.
train from Greenwich station to London bridge then change onto the underground combined rail/tube tickets are available on selected routs
Think that might be a little too fr out for us - back to the drawing board - I keep getting distracted by other things eg - theatre & meal deals - theatre & hotel packages 
It's a bit out on a limb there Helen .Not ideal if you want to be close to central london . Unless you mean north Greenwich where the 02 is . Any more choices
At the moment I'm back to Paddington Lyn, which is where we usually stay. I can't believe how much prices in London have shot up, since we were there last a few years ago. I remember commenting on the bathroom in the hotel - that it was like stepping into a bathroom in a caravan - & even that hotel is nearly £300 for 3 nights. You couldn't even turn round in there. 
. I've picked loads & when I look at reviews they're rubbish. I don't expect 4* for what I want to pay, but I don't want, cramped, damp smelly either 
I'm sure I'll find something if I look hard enough - but I've spent all night on this and am none the wiser - any suggestions?

Have you tried Tavistock hotel where we stayed before?
Forget that I've just looked and it's expensive!
Paddington is a good location (my mum is one stop from Paddington) and is good for connections on the tube. It doesn't take long to get anywhere from there.
I had a friend stay at the Cardiff about two years ago and they were happy with that. Think it was not far from Paddington stations. I'll also ask my mum for suggestions over the weekend if you're not sorted by then.

Not really helen . Living so close london for us is a place where we work and unfortunately dont spend as much time socially as we probably should there.
I wouldnt have a clue where to look for hotel suggestions but I can help with transport and distance stuff . How are the budget chain hotels comparing . Dont travelodge and premier inn have a couple in central london i.e covent garden ??
Have you scrolled through the TA top voted hotels . Just had a quick look and there were a few on the first few pages with a average price of under £100 . Check the B+B list too .
What dates are you looking at and where are your 4 narrowed down choices .
hi Lyn -Well I'm ecstatic now -looks like I've got myself a bargain. 4* Harrington Hall in Kensington, complete with gym & sauna. I haven't had a chance to look at all the sites yet, but the prices I've come up with so far range from £395 - £565 for 3 nights - & I've paid £255 with Lastminute.com - booking a Top Secret Room- bargain or not
