I hope I can pick some brains here if you don't mind....
We're planning on a week's holiday in Lanzarote right at the beginning of Jan and I wondered if all the restaurants etc will be open this time of year? Are there any resorts that partially close down in the winter or is it business as usual all year round everywhere?
Also I've been reading that the weather is approx 20c that time of year but I've also noticed people talking about needing extra blankets at night - does that mean the evenings are really chilly, would we need a coat?
Finally is there a resort anyone would recommend at this time of year? We're not interested in clubbing but want restaurants (preferably with a good choice and not just English style) and shops/markets to wander around and also would like the chance of sunny weather on the island. Don't ask for much do we
Any advice would be most welcome
Many thanks
We went to costa teguise for xmas last year the weather was really nice only needed a cardigan a couple of nights did plenty of sunbathing even if a little windy at times. There is plenty of shops, places to eat & the buses are cheap enough for you to get around to different places. Oh & some good markets too. Some one may suggest other resorts this is just my opinion, hope you have a good holiday if you decide to go.
Hi Vonny thanks for your quick reply. Costa teguise was somewhere we were looking at but as it's one of the more northenly resorts I wasn't too sure about it weather-wise so very pleased to hear you had sunbathing weather during your stay....so that resort is now back on my list
We have been to Lanzarote most Januarys over the last 12 years. We usually go to Costa Teguise - and whilst on most occasions it has been fine during the day (with one or two exceptions when rained for a week- fortunately we were away for a fortnight!) - it generally does get very cold in the evening (made worse in CT because of the wind) - so we always take coats. You may find some bars close for a week or so after the new year but there is generally enough to be going on with.
Playa Blanca tends to be less windy and whilst my heart is in CT - PB is probably better for fine dining.

The weather can be quite cold in the evening and you would need a coat.
But they also added it is ALWAYS a great deal warmer than England! It is also quieter.
hi, went to ct in january this year, had a wonderful weeks holiday, rained one day only that was the day we went to fire mountain. didn't spoil the holiday though. gets cold at night but once you have had a drink you don't notice it. can't wait to go back.
What about beach or harbour? My dad's a keen fisherman and enjoys a walk on the harbour or promenade. Is there a harbour or prom in PDC? lots of questions I know, but I don't know anything about the place. Thanks once again!
shirley, I've replied on the weather thread. Do you know where they are staying? There are two good places to watch the fishing, or do some yourself. One is at the bottom of Calle Anzuelo behind the tourist information, and the other is in the old town harbour, with people fishing off the rocks too. Most bars and restaurants will be open, as the winter season is supposedly the busiest time.
Puerto Del Carmen, although being the busiest resort in Lanzarote, is very laid back, especially in the winter months. There are some karaoke type bars but a typical evening would consist of a nice meal and a quiet drink.
Its a lovely walk along the seafront but there is some traffic about along there.
As for being a flat resort, I think you should have done a bit of research because it is fairly hilly, depends where they are staying, but as I have already mentioned in my other post taxis are readily available.
There are many excursions to other parts of the island which may interest them ie fire mountain, a volcanic experience which is quite breathtaking to look at. There is an office selling these trips opposite the beach called Lanza Tours, the hotel complex will tell them roughly where it is.
Hope this helps.
They're staying in the Oasis Apartments. They just wanted a cheap break for mum's birthday. They go away a lot and don't really treat these breaks as holidays i.e. don't eat out too much, don't do trips etc. They just want to get away from the British winter. A typical day would consist of breakfast in the apartment followed by a short stroll along a prom or to the harbour etc, calling for a coffee and brandy on the way. Probably they will return to apts mid-afternoon to rest and have a bite to eat there again. They will eat the occasional evening meal out and go on to a Karaoke bar but will almost certainly be in bed by 10-30-11pm.
I'm a bit worried that it's a hilly resort as mum has a bad hip and also broke her leg last year. I normally do my research well,, but it seems I missed this. One review I read said that the immediate area was flat, so I took that as gospel
Does anyone know of the Oasis apartments? Is the area between here and the shops/harbour/bars relatively flat. She isn't disabled but isn't able to manage too many steps and steep hills. Thanks again.
Hi again shirley! Oasis apartments are at the less hilly end of Puerto del Carmen. No really steep hills to climb so should be fine for your mum. Although I see it says only a 5 minute walk to the beach, I would say that would be very quick walking! There are several ways down to the seafront from Oasis, so I'm sure they will be able to find the flatest!!! It would be more than a short stroll to the harbour though, as they are at the other end of the town.
that's really detailed info. I'll pass that on to them. I can relax a bit now. They're on a bit of a budget, so it wasn't easy finding something suitable. Thanks again.
Thanks also to Pippy. I read those Pip, before I made up my mind to book. Ta!
