We returned on Monday after 6 hectic days. It was certainly a lot hotter than I had expected but weather broke down just as we entered the plane and we sat on the runway for 2 hours due to rain and wind. Couldn't believe it- Aberdeen airport would never be open if they panicked as much .
Loved the Platinium hotel. I have done a review for it. I particularly liked the fact that it did not have a casino. Less than 10 minutes walk took you to the centre of the strip. We did eat at Ellis Island once, after recommendations here and a big thumbs up for it . But has anyone stopped at their bar? We had a whale of a time there- karaoke nights- something I usually avoid like the plague but the locals were good. Funniest thing ever was Elvis lookalike( so he thought anyway) aka Vince. The worst Elvis singer ever and everyone cheered and treated him as a star-I'm sure he thinks he's great. Another good thing about the bar are the drink prices. A bacardi and a beer were 5 dollars.
I love the shows we went to. First one was the Rat Pack- a dinner and show package and well worth it. Also it was at the Plaza so we nipped over to Freemont to see the light show We hummed and haad over whether or not to go to Elvis as OH is a huge fan. Glad we did. Both of us really enjoyed it. Just before that we went to the Aria buffet and that was fantastic. We preferred it to Spice market( which was also great). We left the best show till last- Le Reve. That was definitely spellbinding and how do you explain it to anyone??
Another great show we saw was one we came across during the day- at Hawiaan Marketplace. The Love Brothers- fabulous singers and we sat for almost a couple of hours.
We enjoyed the Titanic exhibition at Luxor. Also was surprised by what we saw of Luxor as I know it doesn't get rave reviews but it looked ok to me. However, it does seem to be getting done up just now. Favourite hotels were Ceasar's Palace and Venetian for wandering around in.
We also had a good laugh at Stratosphere. We didn't venture on the rides or trying skydiving but it was good to watch.
I had a bit of an off day so we decided to take the hop on hop off bus for an overview of the strip. Its a 2 day pass and I'm glad we did. Haven't heard anyone mention it. I think I just got too exhausted with walking for miles and my labyrinthitus kicked in that day so this was a way of seeing things the easy way.
We also enjoyed the Shark Reef at Mandalay and seeing the white tigers at Mirage( although I am not sure if I should really)
Vegas isn't really my type of holiday. I did wander about that as we are not into gambling- but it was worth a shot. Also we used BA miles and went upper deck on Club World... if only we had loads of money
The biggest mystery to me- how on earth do you play craps??? Spent ages watching and hadn't a clue!
On saying it isn't my type of holiday, we may go again and work it in with the shows and another stop. We fancy trying Pheonix.
We did actually win when in Vegas- unfortunately it was only £8.20 on the Euro lottery
Glad you enjoyed Las Vegas, I stayed in the Luxor and thought it was OK, but like you my favourite was Ceasars Palace, reminded me of all the great boxing legends that had fought there over the years.
I hope you went in to the Chimmy Choo shop in the Venetian and bought yourself an expensive pair of shoes
Not sure if I would return to LV again though.
Wasn't allowed in that shop OH always wanted to visit Ceasars because of all its history too.
Sounds like you covered a lot of ground in your 6 days. Lots of people go to Vegas and don't gamble, Tangobunny for one.
We liked Viva Elvis too, especially the part with the trampolines. Did you catch Big Elvis at Bill's if OH is a fan? He doesn't look like him, but he does sound like him.
What about San Diego if you are thinking of going back? I have read nothing but good things about it.

On our recent 2nd trip to vegas we had a really good meal at Ellis Island, portions were huge We went into the bar on our first trip and did on this trip as well, it has been done up since our last visit, there are some really good singers and you are right the drinks are cheap it is a good night. My husband had to drag me out of a shop at the Wynn it was selling christmas ornaments but also had alot of very expensive house furnishings which in my mind I was imagining in our little humble abode, the shop assistant approached my hubby and asked if she could help him and his reply was yes - try and get my missus out of here before she decides to buy something,my credit card could not stand the strain, she did actually laugh, we walked passed the shop again on our way out and I was ushered vdery quickly past by my hubby - he is such a spoilsport !!!
Put your chips on 'pass line' once the dice are out of play (no disc on number etc, and payouts just taken place).
First throw - if they throw a 7 you win. If they throw another number, they put the disc on that number. The person has to then throw that number again before rolling a 7. 7 means you lose, other number means you win. It's good fun because you all want the same thing (unless you have people playing don't pass etc).
Lovely to see you Fiona You sound as though you had a great time and many thanks for the review
Luci- funnily enough BA have started flying to San Diego so I can use some airmiles. Polly- your husband sounds exactly like mine
Lesley- don't tell me it was easy as that I couldn't understand all the parts of the table but did know throwing a 7 was good. Glynis- how could I not post a review
Fat Elvis- we missed that and also the fact that Bills was probably a great stop off point at night. How annoying when we walked past it all the time.

It's BIG Elvis not Fat Elvis. He's actually lost over 600lbs in weight and is still big so you can only imagine what size he was before.
Bill's also cheap for drinks and has 99c margaritas.

In fairness I never saw the man and just got the name wrong. ( I did see little Elvis and Little Marlyn Munro though)
It sounds as though you had an good holiday despite the bout of labyrinthitus. Hope you have recovered now.
Judith
thanks Judith- it was really only one day that was bad.
Where is this Ellis Island?
Ellis island is behind Bally's/Paris. You go up the side of bally's (Flamingo Road) then turn right at Platinum. It's sort of next door to Platinum. It's quite a contrast though, Platinum is very nice, and Ellis Island is an old dive. They do cheap drinks, good pizza (metro - takeaway) and also a lot of people like the food. The American Casino Guide has a coupon for 4 free drinks, and also one for 2/1 food item. Makes it even better!
The Pizza at Ellis Island is spot on! I think it's Wednesdays when they do 2 for 1 pizzas. We had two 9 inch hot and spicy pizzas (can't remember the proper name) with loads of Jalopeno's on them.....it was fantastic and they cost $9 total......we had two coronas for a buck each with them so we had pizza and beer for $11. Bargain!!
TeeCee - sounds like you sat in. I bought them as takeaway, and can't remember a seating area. Is it a bit fast food sort of seating, or can you have pizza in the main restaurant? Are you meaning Metro Pizza? Just curious, as I'd probably go back for pizza and sit in if I could. We definitely missed Platinum this year, so will want to go back there in the future.
Yes, there is a sit down area (fast food section) but it was full so we sat at a couple of slots and ate our pizza and drank our beer whilst gambling! Not easy but really enjoyable
Cheers

Anyone got any trips planned for 2011 yet? I'm sure Luci is booked. I looked up flights again and they're still over £600 - I said to Kevin that we won't be going next year then at that price (joking, but to see what he said), and he just said that it was the tax so maybe we'll never go on holiday again then. Thankfully he was kidding too. Ok, it won't stop us from going, but I still want to get flights for under £500 each, just because we always have!!
Having said that, there's a possibility that I may be made redundant next year so I don't want to jump to conclusions but I'm hoping everything works out and I can keep going to Vegas!!
