Our transfer took 3 hours to Eftalou. The transfer coach was old, the airconditioning was weak/non existant and it was an extremely hot day. No water was available and one chap was overcome by the heat and was taken off. If we had been cattle someone would have faced prosecution!
Lesvos is a great island and still retains a lot of Greek character. The next time we visit we'll get a car from the airport.
Kath - we go on the 26 July for two weeks - mid-holiday season, I know, but I work in a school and the one drawback is going in school holidays.
Really looking forward to it!
Helen
We normally stay in Petra (and are in June) but always spend a fair bit of time in Molyvos. Great people. Great food. Stunning 'village' (it was a Greek city state in 500BC). You'll honestly remember your first view of it for the rest of your life. The Sea Horse is down in the harbour and I'd say you'll have about ten restaurants to choose from in just a few minutes walk and lots more up in the village proper.
Petra is worth a proper exploration too. It has many great restaurants and tavernas and a sandy beach but just follow your nose and see what you bump into.
If you walk or drive up to some of the surrounding villages you will find little or no evidence that this part of the island is considered a tourist destination. In between villages be a little careful with your camera though; Turkey is only just over the water and the Greek military have facilities they do not want photographed.
Have a fantastic time.
We stayed there last September and had a greaat time. A lovely hotel I would recommend to anyone. Feeding the fish when having breakfast is great. Some great eating places at night close by.
The Seahorse is in a great location and the staff are really friendly. We did however find a couple of restaurants here (by the harbour) very touristy and overpriced, probably because of the visiting yachts. Our meal at the Captains Table was poor and the owner, an Australian lady called Melinda, was quite snooty. We may just have been unlucky.
1. Do any tour operators still go to Sigri?
2. Has anyone been there? What I'm really after is opinions on staying there for a fortnight when we do not drive. Would we go stir-crazy? Could we get across to Skala Eressos - which has umpteen restaurants and bars - by bike?
We went into Sigri with another couple last September but only for long enough to take a look round the castle and eat lunch. Thought the little crescent beach next to the village was lovely - as was the taverna there.
It really is 'the end of the road' for Lesbos though - or probably anywhere else we've been.
No rush; this would be for next year.
We thought Sigri was charming and found at least 5 tavernas but for us a couple of days would be enough. We had a car and drove to Skala Eressos on good roads but I seem to remember a coastal track that might be walkable. Dont know any tour operators doing it now, think Sunvil and Direct have dropped it

We try to go to Greece twice a year but independent travel is way beyond our means (and hassle-threshold) and sadly it sounds like that would be the only way. So it goes.
I suppose Skala Eressou or a two centre holiday (thanks for suggesting that 'Ouzo') including Skala Eressou might be a option. We wouldn't mind leaving our room behind and blowing an extra 50-60 euros to stay in Sigri a couple of nights. We've done that an Lesvos before with both Molyvos and Skala Eressou and really enjoyed the 'break'.
By the way, Skala Eressou may be a long trek but it really is a very nice Lesvos resort too, with loads of restaurants and shops, good swimming and a huge beach. Not being drivers we went down there on the lunchtime 'school' bus from Kalloni in 2005 and stayed two nights. As the only buses back out were at 0600, we did end up paying for a rather expensive taxi ride back to Petra though...
As for Lesvos we particularly like the Eftalou area. Its within walking distance of Molyvos and very unspoilt.
The local bus runs Anaxos - Petra - Molyvos - Efthalou too. Efthalou has a very long pebble beach, the hot springs and a couple of good tavernas.
A good place to stay in Plomari is the Pebble Beach Hotel. Plomari is a traditional town with little tourist infrastructure. If you go say hello to Jimmy/George and Angie for us (Elaine & Pete)
This is the only tour operator I could find offering accommodation in Sigri and flights with British Airways.

Thanks Kath but (sigh) transfer to Sigri is by the hire car they include in the package... which you obviously have to drive yourself... and we don't drive.
Anyone know the ourania? In petra?
hi
Thanks, but got back yesterday after a great holiday! What room was you lesley?
we were in room 8 on the top floor, great views of the mountains.
