The cruise ships dock at Limassol New Port which is a couple of kilometres from the old town where there are lots of shops, tavernas etc. There is a bus service which runs from the port to the Old Town and onwards into the resort. Number 30 and its quite frequent. Not sure where exactly you would pick it up from though I have never used it.
The nearest beach is at Lady's Mile but you would have to walk it and its a fair way. Alternatively, once you are into the old town, the main beach is not far away.

thanks for the reply louise, we have about 8 hours there so hope to see a few things.
zeusy14, thats plenty of time. Limassol Old Town is a big favourite for a lot of visitors, its the best part of the town in my opinion. Enjoy.
