What area of Loch Lomond are you coming to ?

Depending on what particular area you are staying and whether you will have your own transport, you can easily get to Stirling, visit the castle there (William Wallace - Braveheart country) plus good shopping.

Glasgow is also easily reached with many Galleries / Museums and a large choice of shopping and eating.

Slightly further away you could go to Edinburgh.

Another excellent day would be to go 'Doon the water' (cruise on the Clyde) on the Paddle steamer Waverley, the last sea going paddle steamer in the world, this is one of my favourites, the scenery is amazing especially if you can spend the day on board and go to Tighnabruaich.

Approx 45 mins - 1 hour away is Strathclyde park (near Hamilton) which has a theme park and also an indoor tropical rainforest.

Thanks for the links, pippy, and grahame, we are staying in the "loch lomond holiday park" in tarbet, so im sure we will find some of them useful.

A good ride out would be to Glen Coe, it`s awe-inspiring, and absolutely tales your breath away! We stayed at Luss, not very far from where you`ll be, it`s very pretty, if a bit touristy, and you can go for boat trips from almost anywhere round the loch. Just make sure that you take a good insect repellent with you, we went in July, and the midges can be VISCIOUS!!!!!!!!

Sorry, meant to mention the Scottish Sea Life Sanctuary on the shores of Loch Creron near Oban, it`s well worthy of a visit, they`ve got a brilliant breeding programme going for those beautiful little creatures the sea horses, and at the back of the otter section you can stand on the loch shore, and the view is lovely. There`s also Inverary, the jail is interesting, and if you`re out for a drive on the A82 at Tyndrum, the Green Welly Stop is ideal for almost anything you might need, i.e. petrol, food and souvenir shopping, a meal (restaurant or take away), or just stand and enjoy the view.

Lomond Woods Holiday Park in Balloch has some lovely lodges, lots of things to do within walking distance and lovely places to visit for day trips in the area

We stayed in the older lodges there regularly up til 1998(I think they were quite new at the time). We then bought a touring caravan and have stayed on there many times with our tourer. The lodges which we stayed in are lovely but they now have some new ones which I assume they let out as well.(though you would need to ask about that)

Being from Balloch I can confirm that Lomond Woods is a good choice of location.
Balloch has easy access to Stirling, Glasgow and also the West Coast area. There is a regular train service to Glasgow should you not want to take the car.
In the Balloch area there is also a wide range of amenities available so you have all that you require locally.

Hi Butch,

I live 15 minutes drive from Loch Lomond and can tell you that you won't get any better advice than Graham has already provided.

However, I see from a previous Cornwall thread that you are coming to Loch Lomond due to a wedding invitation, so you might want to take account of the location for the wedding before making your decision.

Do you know where the wedding is being held?

Also, are you visiting short term to attend the wedding, or are you planning a longer holiday around the visit?

And as you're going in August, remember to pack the insect repellent because it will be the height of the midgie season! Loch Lomond is particularly bad, so bad that when one of the universities up here wanted to test out their prototype 'midgie hoover' they sited them on hotel terraces in the locality on the grounds that if they worked and were effective by Loch Lomond and enabled people to sit outdoors in comfort of a summer evening then they'd work anywhere :-)

I second the advice about the midge repellant, but you would be hard put to find a more beautiful place, but then I`ve said that about various locations in Scotland, it`s such a beautiful country.

Oban would make a nice little day trip too ... the gateway to the isles

Oh, and i wouldn't be doing my local bit if i didn't plug my home town of Falkirk .... come see the wheel!

A good repellant (and nice for the skin) is Avon Skin So Soft, the Replenishing Dry Oil Body Spray is probably the best.

And don't forget Helensburgh mew279, if you are looking for a day out. Helensburgh is 10-15mins drive from the Balloch area of Loch Lomond and if you are around on a Thurs Fri or Sat you may well want to take a trip on the last ocean going paddle steamer.

It leaves Helensburgh pier on Thurs @11am, and Sat @12.10. and Fridays from Kilcreggan pier (30 min drive from Balloch) @ 11.55, sailing to various places down the river Clyde.

Actually as Jade says the Waverley is a good day out, but to be honest I would do the whole cruise starting from the Science Centre in Glasgow and enjoy the trip 'Doon the Water' from the city centre.

The wedding is in Glasgow central somewhere, to answer JAY JAY's question we are going to be having 3 or 4 days before the wedding and we wanted to have a bit of a short break before the big day!

At the moment on the list to see is the Falkirk Wheel and the Glasgow Science Museum
