I'm sure that they'll find plenty to do in the day. I'm going to draw up a shortlist tomorrow and then give them the choice. Saturday night will be an early meal and then to the show. Friday night will be more tricky I imagine. Usually when it's just hubby & I, we have a little wander, have a meal and spend the rest of the night in the pub. I'm not too sure what we'll do when we've got the children with us. Any ideas?

I've no idea of the price range of the food but I have heard people mention taking their children for a meal atThe Rainforest Cafe on Shaftsbury Avenue, It has a jungle theme.

Thank you for all your ideas, I'll put them to the children when they come here on Thursday. It's a shame the Cutty Sark hasn't reopened, because they'd have enjoyed the trip down the Thames to Greenwich

how about the sights they've seen on telly?

start Buckingham Palace, Changing Guard at 11:30 (but get there earlier) http://www.royal.gov.uk/RoyalEventsandCeremonies/ChangingtheGuard/Overview.aspx

then walk along The Mall (as seen on the wedding a few weeks ago) through Admiralty Arch to Trafalagar Square, turn right along Whitehall past Downing St gates to the House of Parliament, turn left onto Westminster Bridge (right side of road) for traditional view of Big Ben. The actual walking time is around 30 minutes but they'll be delays for crossing roads and looking at things - and so far it's free!!

Left side of bridge is London Eye but the queue may be too long. If so Thames Clipper http://www.thamesclippers.com/ along river to Canary Wharf via Tower Bridge (£3.70 adult if you've already got a Travelcard) then very short walk to Herons Quay DLR station and ride back (included with Travelcard) to Bank (of England).

Well we're back from a fantastic, but very expensive weekend! We had an hour delay on the way up due to signalling problems, so it was quite a long journey for the kids. We managed to take in a visit to Covent Garden and the street artists, Big Ben & the Houses of Parliament, a trip on the Thames Clipper down to London Bridge and HMS Belfast, Madame Toussads, The Eurostar at St Pancreas and Shrek the Musical. A packed weekend!

Hertz launches electric bikes in the capital

Hertz is now offering electric bicycles to rent for visitors to London.

It claims to be the first major car rental company to offer the bikes, which travel at up to speeds of 15.5mph.

Twelve bikes are available for daily rental from Hertz's Marble Arch location, for £20 per day.

With every hire, customers will receive full training, a lock, optional helmet and a copy of the AA Leisure Guide to London with suggested bike rides around the capital.

Lyn - we had to catch a bus back to Paddington, as all the underground lines there, had closures between some stations. Luckily we'd left plenty of time to get to the station.

Can anyone recommend somewhere to eat in the Westminster bridge area please? It doesn't have to be somewhere posh, just clean with nice food, and big enough to accomodate a table of 12 people.

Have a look at this place Helen http://www.sjss.org.uk

We ate here a year or so ago and it was good.

Looking at the website it seems they have reduced the opening hours since we went. Looks like its only open at linchtimes and when there is something on in the evening. Shame as it was good.

It looks like somewhere that hubby & I would enjoy at a lunchtime.

There's a place on Peter's Hill, just opposite St Paul's, on the way down to the Millenium Bridge.

Don't be put off, but I think it's run by the Salvation Army. Down the steps into a nice cafeteria, NOT a flop house or greasy spoon, and very reasonably priced. I found it by accident while looking for a loo, and it's a place I'll visit again (the cafe, not the loo! ;) ). It was used by quite a few office workers and not vagrants, miscreants or tramps.

Edited by me for link - Fair Trade Cafe

I'm presuming it depends on which events you're going to watch and where they're staged :que
